F.A.S.T Times?

Thanks, not good enough though. I need to dry fire and shoot more which is difficult to find time for right now. I'm hoping to pick up a lot of tips from Earl at the course.:)

Finally got under 7 seconds today!:D
Time: 6.99 sec
Pistol: Glock 17
Holster: Solely Canadian Kydex
Condition: Drew from under a Parklands BDU vest.

On the second run in the video I rode the slide release so the slide didn't lock. I had to manually run the slide, so it slowed me down a little. Feel free to critique the video!

Time: 6.03 seconds
Pistol: Glock 17 Gen 4
Holster: Calculated Sentience LLC Kydex holster and pouches
Condition: Drew from open front jacket

This is a personal best, and I'll admit everything was jelling that day. Usually I'm just sub 7 seconds or a little over. My biggest hurdle would have to be getting my first shot off the draw faster. Press out is fine, but I take too long to sight in...almost like I don't trust my instincts. Any tips?

Umm - trust your instincts???

Seriously though, nice jobe. How do you like that holster???

I like it a lot. It was quite tight at first because mine is also designed to fit an Insight M3X light as well and the molding was quite tight behind the light module. I had to sand the interior bumps around the light switch so it would be a smoother draw. Still retains gun with or without light.

As for my "instincts" comment, what I meant was I know I should shoot, but I get that mental block that tells me "no, not yet" even though if I just squeeze and shot is probably going to go where I want it too. I have no idea if that makes any sense LOL.

Nice work - very smooth. Quicker on the first shot than you used to be.

Thanks! I've been working at it a bit. I still feel like I lose a lot of time on the reload. I find it hard to practice the reload at home without making a lot of noise so it tends to get neglected.

My hat is off to anyone that can shoot 6 sec or better on this test consistently. I really feel it is one way to get a decent measure of overall level of skill within the discipline.

Looked nice and smooth to me. What is your split on the draw and first shot?

is there time deductions for no holster? im still wondering where ranges want you to get holster certified from, to be allowed to draw from holster and not bench

No...no holster means you are not doing a draw stroke. If your draw stroke can't be timed, there's no way to assess your overall abilities as a pistol shooter in the way this test purports to do.

Sorry, I don't really know! I've just been working on getting a faster and smoother draw stroke during dry fire. I didn't really pay attention to it at the range, but I should. There's probably a way to go back through the memory on my timer but I never really got that far with the manual.

Take a course from Earl - that ought to make you holster qualified anywhere in Ontario.

i shall look into that, thanks!

I ask because I shoot semi-regularly in our club steel shoot and my splits are generally 1.50-1.70 seconds on the draw/first shot, but you look a lot faster than I feel. I don't practice nearly enough, but I feel like I should be able to shave 0.25-0.40 seconds off my draw if I was dilligent with the practice.

I am just trying to get a feel for what is reasonable for a duffer like myself to achieve without enormous amounts of practice.

LOL! This is exactly the what I'm wondering! I'll be sure to record my splits next time. I think that I may be able to get into the mid 6's if I keep up with the dry firing. I just can't get to the range enough to expect more than that.

You might have already seen it if you frequent pistol-training.com, but read this article: http://pistol-training.com/articles/speed-kills

Todd Green is very good at explaining concepts and his ideas on training to shoot faster is well articulated. Definetly helped me speed up my body shots.

Today...

Time: 6.90 Sec (clean)
Pistol: Glock 17, Gen 3 - 9mm 115g
Holster: Solely Canadian Kydex, Solely Canadian "Stick Mag" Kydex Mag Holder
Condition: Drew from an open zippered hoodie.

I should note that this run was the second in a string of my first three (cold) drills of the day. The other two were too pitiful to post....

Consistency is the real bugger with this test - every thing works right and you're flying, one thing goes wrong and it's a train wreck. I think that's why it's such a good measure, it either goes 100% or Murphy's driving the bus. Running at 6.90 clean is awesome it lets you know what you're capable of, making it consistent is a matter of looking at what went wrong when you didn't hit that. The last time I ran it I was in train wreck country, it took me a while to realize I was trying to do a draw from concealed with nothing in my pocket - put my keys back in my pocket and it went much better (not enough weight in the jacket to allow it to clear the gun).
