F.A.S.T Times?

^^Well said. Shooting from concealment adds another element that can sometimes screw up your whole test.

I find when I try not the rush the first two shots then everything falls into place. Doing this test only three times a session and cold is humbling.

Guys running consistently in the 5's or under show an extreme amount of skill with a pistol. I don't think I'll ever be able to get there given the amount of rounds and dry fire my lifestyle allows. It's good fun trying though!

Vogel got coin 18 today with two clean runs out of 3 back to back at the end of the day after packing up. he borrowed a vest as he didn't have his. Times were 4.7 and 4.3. Video up on Todd's site later this week.

I disagree strongly with this post...well, specifically this part:

I don't think I'll ever be able to get there

I'll bet you will get there. I don't shoot nearly as much as most people expect and I've had more than a few sub-6 clean FAST and a couple at 5.

Also, consider that when you started this thread, your goal was to get under 7. You're there!

Finally, my recommendation, if you don't do it already, is to work with par times a bit at home. I found I sped WAY up when I put up my ipod with a random "shooter ready...beep" and a 2 second beep. I got used to the process of getting on target, squeezing the trigger twice in a steady cadence, and dropping the mag by the 2 second mark.

And I have finally cracked and gone to the tofu blade method of clearing cover. It's faster and I have never had an issue with effectiveness. I think it is as dependable as "the flick".

I couldn't do a 5 second FAST right now I don't think...been spending too much time filing and fitting 1911 parts, and not enough practicing reloads on those damn skinny stick mags.

Thanks for the post Misanthropist.

I have recently started a more aggressive dry firing regime that focuses mostly on draw and reload speed. I just can't get to the range as much as I would like so dry fire has to make up the difference. I try to get in ten minutes a day.

I like your drill. I'm usually able to clear cover and get one shot in aprox 1.7 sec, but that's just tracking the front sight..no real precision. So your 2 sec par time with another shot and mag drop will be a challenge!

OK...new goal: under 6 seconds.

PS: I curious about your 1911 project. What's the specs?

Norinco frame, slide, barrel
WC Bulletproof fire control bits and pretty much all small parts
Ed Brown grip safety
Extensive frame contouring
Checkering etc
Novak cuts for better sights

Ultimately I will probably replace the barrel with a Barsto or Kart. If I were in the US I'd look for a take-off Colt (cheaper and the Colt NM barrels are on par with anything but maybe Kart) but that's probably not possible here.

I think that about covers it. I just missed out on a Bonar/Rogers customized Colt so that frees up some (lots of) money to go back to work on it...

For sure I will post a couple. The big changes will be around the web area to maximize the high grip (hence the Ed Brown grip safety) and the trigger guard. I'm also considering countersinking the slide stop, and doing a full melt just for fun. About the only thing I definitely won't do will be Browning cuts on the slide...just because there's no way I'm doing that by hand.

Well finally got to give it a try, averaging 6.45 - 6.85 clean. Any faster and I'm missing one of the head shots.. Draw is somewhere around 1.65 - 1.75 which is slower then I would like. Shooting a Glock 19 Gen 4 out of an uncle mikes holster, factory 124gr 9mm. Nothing special.

I'll see if I can take some video next time.

Now I may be mistaken but im assuming the "tofu blade" technique is where you bring you hand in and acoss our side then drive down to the gun as opposed to flicking the garment away? Ive always swept my hand in against my body and driven to the gun so I dont know if thats what im supposed to be doing but it seems to work better for me than the flick... I R NOOB so I apologize.

Just a light jacket, I don't have any tactical fishing vests so just my fall jacket for now.
Those are some good times you posted! I will say that the vest seems much easier to clear than other garments I've tried, at least in my experience. The vest I have, which I hardly ever wear and then only to the range, is much heavier than anything else I have and I believe that weight makes it a bit faster to clear.

I am able to clear cover and get an aimed shot in under 1.7 in dry fire with an open front hoodie. So personally I would be happy with your live fire times.

I'll try my vest during dry fire tonight and see if I can get under 1.5.

Dry fire was interesting.

I was able to get under 1.5 with both the vest and the hoodie but I found that I wasn't able to get a real solid sight picture at or under that par time. 1.6 was much more achievable with both garments and I was able to get a better grip on the pistol as well. I have the reflexes of a half dead sloth, so I'm reasonably happy with those times.

I couldn't get the tofu blade method to work at all - I'm probably doing it wrong. I ended up just doing the flick and it seemed to work better for me.

I find I go way too far past the pistol when doing the flick and grabbing the garment is hit and miss for me. I couldn't find any videos on the blade method but I remember Todd Jarred talking about it at a demo I went to at SHOT Show 2012, I've been using it since and its always worked for me. I've got a match sunday then will be going out to shoot again monday so should get a video somewhere in there..

Fooling around today no cover garment I got an A zone at 7m with 0.84 but it was more luck than anything... couldnt repeat it again if you paid me.

Dry fire today was focused on reloads. Last week I was doing reloads with no cover garment at under 1 sec consistently (drop the mag, mag back in).

With an open hoodie I could only get consistent reloads at or under 1.3sec. Any faster and I had lots of bobbles. Oddly, most of my problems getting times under 1.3 were with getting the mag back in the well. A lot of times the mag would hang up on the side of the well.

I found when I keep the pistol closer to my body and my head down my speed increases, but keeping my head down is not something I want to ingrain as a habit, so I won't be doing it.

Anyway, I figure if I can break this drill down into it's component pieces and practice the specifics like drawing from concealment and reloading I might be able to crack some better scores (with lots and lots of practice on trigger press).

I'm doing a nice job wearing the finish off my Glock from all the Kydex!
