Famae 540 vs. XCR vs. ACR

What about the XCR claims from Robarms and wolverine that the xcr needs milspec ammo only. No commercial or handloads.... (see out of battery discharge thread.

Probably "safer" to use milspec but realistically how many times have you heard of this happening? The only instance I have heard of is in that particular thread.

While I won't argue your perceptions, I will point out again (because people keep posting the same erroneous info) that stamped steel parts are not necessarily cheap. In fact many stamped production guns are the top of their particular class. HK produced them for decades, and the SG550/Classic Green family are the epitome of quality stamped steel production. In all cases the guns are made of very high quality steel. Stamping is used because for large production runs it is very economical. However it is hardly cheap.
Amazingly enough the same folks that decry stamped production guns then claim that extruded aluminum is superior!
I agree that stamped doesn't necessarily mean cheap but I think the point was that the Chilean clone was not made to the same standard of quality as the Swiss original, despite being only marginally cheaper. I can see the value of the SG542 plummeting if/when the Swiss Arms gets un-prohibited.

I don't know if you should really be comparing the 540 to the 550.
That's kind of like comparing the original AR16 to the last AR180B made.
Perhaps you need to have a comparison between a French made 540, a Portuguese made 540 and the Chilean made 540.

Handled the SG542 at my LGS the other day and thought the same.. No way would I spend 3k+ on it. It's all just stamped cheap metal and plastic.. Nothing machined nothing feels or looks quality, has expensive proprietary magazines.. Wasn't my cup of tea, maybe if it retailed for 1500.
I find the Famae price high as well, It is built to the Sig standard but with far less care and attention. It comes in at a cost slightly lower than what the swiss arms rifles sold for yet the swiss rifles were built to a much higher quality standard from what I have seen.

To put it in to layman's terms it is like taking a VW golf made in Germany and parking it next to the VW golf we see here in north america that is made in Mexico. You would either have to be blind or very ignorant not to notice the difference.

Actually as pointed out above the FAMAE is built to the SIG standard and you would need to compare to other 540's to compare relative quality. There is no doubt the 550 is a much better rifle. That is why the Swiss adopted it. However I think you might be unpleasantly surprised at what the current retail price of a Classic Green would be if unprohibited. It is likely their retail price will be about $4600.

I am looking to get NR black rifle as well. I like FAMAE but I do not like their mags. In any situation, I cannot just slap in pmags or lar15 mags. I have to find the ones that designed for it.
Adding Tavor to the selection, which one is the most versatile and reliable? Tavor, FAMAE SG540/542, ACR or XCR?

For me, as I have handled them all it would be ACR first then SG540, Tavor, XCR

Who has ACR in 18" barrel in stock or doing pre order now?
18" barrel would still be restricted?

They are currently only available from factory with a 16" barrel and then you need to have someone make and fit a new barrel in your desired length. You just missed a big sale on New ACR's by both Arms east and Irunguns. Doubtful if prices that low will be seen again

tavors are built like tanks not as accurate
acr are heavy but accurate, quite hardy as well

cant speak about the other two, never owned either, but ive read some reviews on them, really not impressed, probably why i never bothered.

Sorry. I mean 18.5".
Is Famae sg540 or 542 for $2499 good deal? But their mags price is 5x pmags. Sigh.

I have owned all except the 540 or 542, however I have played with both at a couple different shops.

In my opinion, the ACR and Tavor are the clear leaders, no question. However they are both so uniquely different that it is best to pick the one that has the most important features to you, or if your stupid, enjoy both!

C' don ben bo ca :)

I would wait to see what happens with the swiss arms, they are much better quality when you compare the two

Wait till you see the new pricing on SAN products though. The CHF is trading over 1.37 now, the last shipments of rifles were brought in when it was about 1.08. The price differential will not be as small as people think.
