Famae 542 Range report and photos (no stopages so far)

Yes I've been using a Leupold Mk4 for groupings.

On my previous outings I had some crazy flyers, none of those today. I'm sure the flash hider was the main issue.

I'm temped to put a FAL flash hider on this rifle so I can use my old C1 bayonet. I would be really cool if some nice wood stocks could be made for this rifle but that is the old school FAL lover in me talking. The plastic stocks and a short comp would likely be more practical, I'd like to use this rifle for hunting at some point and service shoots.

So I took mine out to the range today.

I hung the gongs I built, its 15.5 in by 24'. the "head" is 5 inches square and the flapper hole is a 4 inch circle....

Here is a video at 200m, 5 rounds, I missed one and hit the flapper the other 4... excuse the poodle shooter next to me racking away during my video.

What I disliked about my Classic Green was the change in poi depending how the rifle was supported. Bipod, magwell or handgard moved the grouping a few moa away.
Is this Famae so sensitive to support?

Sorry for the delay, my smith has just finished installing an old school flash hider on my 542 and he has also reworked the gas block cam to remove any play. I'll get it out to the Range in a few weeks and try it out and see how it works.

Yes it is a FAL flash hider and I thought it looked the part. Now I can use my old Canadian C1 bayonet on something. When we took the stock hider off it became obvious that the barrel was the perfect size to fit a FAL hider, it just needed treading. Now all it needs is some wood to replace the plastic.

I'd be interested in seeing a few groups fired with the gas system shut off. Most gas guns shoot a bit better that way.

BTW I dig the FAL flash hider.

The flash hider pins were lose, a few gentle taps with the hammer and punch and they slid right out. The hider then lifted right off with no resistance, it is very lose on the barrel without the pins holding it in place. I think I could tighten the hider up by driving the pins in better but I'll try it without the hider first before I put it back on.

Yes threaded on Muzzle brakes are the best method of attachment as there is less off a chance that it will negatively affect the accuracy, All one has to do is to see just how accurate pinning is on a rifle is look at the XCR line of rifles . they ae all over the place .

I've been waiting for the weather to warm up a bit here in Yellowknife before I shoot it with the FAL hider. I'll post results once I do.

April 9 2015 update: I've fired 670 rounds or assorted ammo through the 542 now with no stopages of any sort.

Shot some groups with the FAL flash hider on the rifle, was getting 5 shot 1.25 to 1.5 inch groups with Norinco copper wash ammo at 100m then shot a load of steel from 100 to 300m :)
