Famae SG 540-1 - An Ongoing Review

Thread updated with a trip to the 40yd range. Next update should be at longer ranges, I just picked up a rangefinder (finally sucked it up and bought one). Looking forward to some 100 and 200yd (ish) groups. This rifle is already being mistaken for a Swiss Arms at the range :p .

EDIT: Added some pics of the bolt etc. I am leaving them as thumbnails so as not to clutter up the first post too much. If you click on them they will enlarge.

Just a note.
The 540 came with two 5/20 mags with no lugs.

I only noticed the flat sided mags in your picture now.
I wonder if these are made in Chile or Swiss?

Driller. If you are going to be near calgary let me know. I have a swiss arms and a 542 so you could put all 3 side by side.

Definitely. I am here for hunting season ( south of Calgary) so next time I come down I will bring it with me.

I think they are probably Chile made, but you would have to ask the importer (Calgary Shooting Centre or Tactical Imports). I think the 30 rounders I have are Swiss or Canam Mags, and they have the clips on the side.

I just picked mine up and had significant play on the forend. Otherwise overall fit and finish is outstanding. One thing to note is that I cannot "speed reload" mags as the release lever needs to be fully depressed. Maybe if I ground down the retaining lip on the mag do you think that could work?

Hi folks, Just wanted to chime in my 2 cents on these rifles. I've owned my 540 for about a year now and being a new shooter it's been a pretty fun gun to learn with. For a battle rifle it's been very solid. I tend to do alot of outdoor camping/4x4 and having a decent non restricted 5.56 rifle to bring out has been great.
With some decent accessories that i've picked up from ERE it's turned into a pretty good looking rifle in my mind. The new stock and AR adapter makes it pretty versatile there's also a new forend coming out (Full disclosure i'm friends with the manufacture)
Overall i've been quite happy with this rifle.

Well, I got my hands on a 542 for the first time today. Definitely not as refined as the Swiss, but it does seem to be reasonably well made. I'd love to take it out and shoot it before reaching a final verdict, but I doubt the owner of the store would let me do that without buying it!
