Famae SG 540-1 - An Ongoing Review

is the mag conversion kit easy to install gish?

Super easy. There are two things to do 1. Drill one small hole for a grub screw for the block. 2. Some very minor mag modification (Need to file a notch in the AR mag to fit the locking latch) It won't effect usage in AR's.
http://eresystems.com/accessories/after-market-famae-accessories/ to convert back to regular mags the block just comes out.

Well, I had the opportunity to shoot a 542 yesterday, and I have to say I am impressed with the over all quality of the FAMAE rifle I was shooting. It's not on the same level as a Swiss Arms, but it is well made. Other than a slight issue with the magazines that prevented the last shot hold open from working (quickly remedied), the gun worked flawlessly. I was also surprised at how easy shooting the .308 was, felt more like a .243. It's a little rough around the edges compared to a Swiss Arms, but you should also consider the fact that it costs $1200 less than the Swiss Arms. Over all, I'd say they're worth the hefty price tag.

Agreed on AR180's review. Handled, stripped and compared both the 540 and 542 and both impressed me. They seem like what they're billed to be - solid battle rifles. They aren't laser shooters, but they're accurate and seem pretty darn solid.

Anyone un-pin the factory flash hider and thread the barrel end on the 540 to 1/2x28 ?
I think I'd like to try out a muzzle brake or two.

I taped on some foam with camo tape for a cheek piece works great and looks good to
I have a 542 that shoots comparable with my M1A NM
Mine eats any ammo I've fed it , including steel case Barnaul , fettuchie, surplus no issues . Just wants more I've put between 4 and 500 rounds through so far not even one fail , accuracy varies , hand loads are the best so far
Just read about the mag conversion , did these come from Calgary shooting centre ?

They work great in my 540. No issues at all feeding. There is only one issue, the pin restraining it to 5 rounds is a bit short so sometimes the mag follower may slip allowing more than 5 rounds in but will jam the mag. You may have to fiddle with them a bit in order to get the pin seated properly so it does what it is supposed to do.

Necro thread resurrection, but I'm curious about whether you still have this gun, how many rounds you've run through it, and if you've had any problems. I have one, and like it a lot, but I've shot it very little.

Ive always wanted to get a 540. The lack of mags and parts worries me though. Regardless they very seldom come up on the EE anyways. I see the occasional 542. But never a 540. They either disappear stupidly quick off the EE, people like them so much they don't sell them or there were never very many in Canada to begin with. I dunno.

Parts, I agree, could be an issue. Mags, not so much.... CanAm has the knockoff Swiss Arms for a reasonable price, and they work great. I bought a bunch years back.

I think this is correct in both parts: they are great guns that people don't want to part with, as well as being comparatively rare.

They're damn rare indeed. I don't know how many guns were imported between North Sylva and ERE, but Tactical Imports apparently only brought in 160 or so guns in the various configurations, with the 543 in low teens I bet.

Took me 6 months of EE crawling to get the 540 I wanted in the condition I wanted.

And with FAMAE practically ceasing export to Canada after jacking up their wholesale prices, we may not see more for a long time.

Im curious were they affected by the SA and CZ858 legislation?

The Classic Greens got in trouble because they were fraudulently presented as variants of the SG 540 and some less than informed person at the RCMP at the time approved them based on their claims.

I believe there are some legit Manurhin or earlier SG 540s floating around in Canada, pre-FAMAE, but they might be converted autos or something like that. I remember one old timer had a pair of old school 540s.

The Manurhin's were specifically manufactured in semi-auto only in .222 and .243.
