I'd like an M44 but the M38 is pretty fun too plus less hastle (ie no bayonet) to go hunting with. Its a fun bush gun, plus it shoots Fireballs ! (don't use in the woods with a burn warning)
Essential milsurps for you, here is a short list
91/30- you got it
M44/M38- need one
SVT40-need one, All in BOLD use the same ammo, great for versatility, less needed cleaning supplies and ballistics
SKS- you got it
TT33- need one with RPAL
K98- need one
Enfield- need one
M1 Garrand- need one
*everything in 7.62 ie mosin/sks/svt/tt33 pistol all have the same bore diameter and will accept the same bore snakes, jags, brushes and cleaning rods (oh those Russians and their efficiency)
*don't worry doesn't happen all at once with the other rifles, 8mm is hard enough to find, 303 is about the same and well 30-06 sure ain't cheap either. Russian surplus really is the best value in centre fire firearms. .
As for 22's there are many options
Norinco JW15 and 25 are both nice 22lrs that are inexpensive based on the CZ
CZ bolt action, if affordable just buy this don't look at the other options its one of the best right now
10/22, full or takedown models if you like light semi's
GSG 15, fun 22lr but i wouldn't recommend this as a first gun
Other models include savage, remington, browning etc... i just have ownership exp with the above and i'd take any of them
