Boomer, the final words in your comment are so true. Case in point: I at one time had 2 - #1 Ruger rifles in 30-06. One was a #1AB, with a 22" barrel, the other a #1B, with a 26" barrel.
With identical loads, the short barrel was always 60 - 100 fps faster than the longer one. There is no way to account for such variances, but the chronograph wasn't lying. To the OP........buy the 270!! D.
NL-H............Never said I was going to buy one myself................but given his parameters, the 270 is the best choice....One thing that cannot be universally denied about the 270 Winchester is the fact that every hardware store from Mexico to the high arctic will have at least 2 boxes on the shelf. Seeing as how the gentleman doesn't reload, it puts the 6.5X55 at a huge disadvantage even though it is a better caliber and cartridge.
