First hunting rifle

NL-H............Never said I was going to buy one myself................but given his parameters, the 270 is the best choice....One thing that cannot be universally denied about the 270 Winchester is the fact that every hardware store from Mexico to the high arctic will have at least 2 boxes on the shelf. Seeing as how the gentleman doesn't reload, it puts the 6.5X55 at a huge disadvantage even though it is a better caliber and cartridge.

pollinator..........I have seen a few boars in my life and shot a couple..........never saw one that would take a .277 150 gn Part in the right spot and still mount an offensive.........I have a good buddy in Texas that pots them regularly from his kitchen or porch window with a Hornet and 45gn factory loads in the bean. He's killed hundreds of them over the years. If he can't get a good head shot he lungs them and then his dog goes and finds them in about 1/2 hour...........they ain't that tough !!!!

Boomer, the final words in your comment are so true. Case in point: I at one time had 2 - #1 Ruger rifles in 30-06. One was a #1AB, with a 22" barrel, the other a #1B, with a 26" barrel.
With identical loads, the short barrel was always 60 - 100 fps faster than the longer one. There is no way to account for such variances, but the chronograph wasn't lying. To the OP........buy the 270!! D.

My guess it that the pressure was no longer high enough to accelerate the bullet against the friction of the rifling/barrel. There's a reason the 1903 has a 24" barrel.

30-06 is one of the standard choices for a first hunting rifle. Lots of rifle choices, ammo at every corner store that sell its and just a good all around caiber. If you're hunting elk and moose, good chance you are in grizzly country so the option of the heavier bullets in the '06 is another bonus.
