First Powder coats!

Here's a curveball. Could you use this safely with say round lead balls in a muzzle loader?

I don't see why not - You are only adding 0.002 with the PC

Oh - Mandatory PC pic.

Well after reading about powder coating here and over at Castboolits. I took the plunge and gathered the materials needed and order some powder form powder365.ca I just finished my first coatings and learned a little, overall had a successful adventure.

My lead victims were 121gr .358 round nose from an NOE mold, great in 9mm or 38 special.

First try was with RAL 6018 Yellow Green powder, using the airsoft BB's in a #5 container. It took a bit of swirling and shaking but the powder did stick OK. Baked in my Wally world toaster oven for 10 min at 375F. results we OK, but not perfect, shootable in my opinion. Although I tried a few with a second coating and it made a slight improvement but a rougher finish. In the future one coat will suffice.

Next was Phantom Black powder which is a gloss black. Now this is a great powder, needs minimal swirling and shaking with BB's in a #5 container and coats beautifully. Bakes at 375 for 15 min and out come some beautiful black bullets. Coverage is about as close to perfect as you can get with a single coat. This will be my go to powder for large volume coatings.

Completed the hammer test with no flaking on both, ran them through a .358 Lee push though sizer and loaded a few 38's for the 686. Very curious to see how they perform.

I bought some black premium airsoft BB's at Crappy tire, I was searching for Crossman black BB's as that was suggested to be the best. I could not find any crossman brand but these looked similar. I can get you the exact brand if you like, but they are current out back in the casting shed.

i couldn't find them either, i might try my brass tumbler and see how that goes for coating.

these?

Spawn, those are the ones I purchased and seem to work fine. From reading a ton of posts at Castboolits, it seems that the brass tumbler did not work so well for those who have tried. I am finding that I really do not need to "swirl" the bullets around in the container as much as shake them up and down. The shaking seems to do the coating, the swirling builds the static up. Just my initial observations. Also a smaller container seemed to be better than a larger one I tried using, maybe all #5 container are not created equal ??

So of course now that we've discovered that Tool Blue is one of the best working powders for this, it's no longer available at Powder365.

Bummer. It worked so well!

What else is good, Phantom Black?

dam them! Kawasaki green works just as good though. another option is smoke4320 on castboolits sells powder that i believe he tested and works really well for tumble coating. prices are decent enough. he quoted me $42 for 4 lbs of powder which would work out to around $100. from powder365 it would be about $60 for the same amount of powder at the same price. i think i would try and order the same colours from powder365 and hope they work the same.

you could try making a small fluid bed. It is what the lead jig guys use. They seem to get a very even coat

interesting idea, i wonder how much powder gets in the air?

i think i'm going to try and build one tonight with a 4" pvc tube.

Just wondering if the OP tried cleaning the bullet in lacquer thinner first prior to powder coating it? That might help with the a better coverage with a single coat....

Dont know if spawn tried it but i sure did and not much difference.

Biggest factor is type of powder coat, the best results for me was black tgic. The non tgic is still good but best results are tgic.

Also humidity is a factor.

examples.

44mag black(BIKE BLACK) tgic pc.

44mag non tgic (SAPPHIRE BLUE) first from left is effect of humidity.

I haven't tried this yet. I just wait for a day with low humidity before tumbling and it sticks good enough I have to knock off the extra.

Been looking at the powder coatings etc. The matt coatings are silica based, black is carbon black, white is titanium dioxide, colours are various veg colours these day, silver will be aluminium and gold will be brass or bronze and copper will be copper based. Clear is also available. Tell me what you would like to pump down your barrels? The worst is probably silica based but I think I would prefer clear!!

Ian

PC has been used for a some time, enough that we would have hundred if not more of barrel damage reports. I have been on cb and 300blk and only a few reports of 1 type of powder.

I dont know for sure but after shooting 600 through my 300blk i have not had any accuracy issues.

I am not saying they all are bad just that some of this stuff may not be good after 1000's of rounds. I have some PC on order and have already coated with four different epoxies I had on the shelf. If one is concerned about stuff going down the barrel there is always clear. I don't think any of the solid standard will be harmful, ie red, blue etc.
