yup, sho nuff, chief, theres lots of civvy FNs out there. If by out there you mean in the USA, since FN's are prohibited firearms up here. But enjoy them at your leisure on the TV, unless you are grandfathered prohib.

The FN CAL is restricted only....with a longer barrel it would be fine for varmint hunting. But good luck finding that in Canada for a reasonable price. They go for 5K to 9K in the US.

Why do I keep seeing these strange hints being dropped around this place..
There seems to be some sort of something coming..
Lies...I packed them around for years. Fired 10's of thousands of rds through them...they suck. especially the chopped cdn body cover that spatters your face with carbon and bits. They're prone to stoppages. Had a butt catch lever open up while firing burst of auto, spilling the carrier and bolt out. We should've got rid of them back in the 60's instead of the 90's.
I packed one around, too. I have also packed around poodle guns (ARs), and now own a Swissarms Classic Green.
My top pick would be a C1A1. I bet yours was just beaten to crap, as sometimes happens when the same old piece of steel has been in service for 40 years - When I went through GMT and Infantry BTT in 1989, I was issued a rifle that was made in 1952, with the finish worn off white over most of the rifle - It still functioned fine, and was accurate enough for troopies to use!
Now, the C2... THAT was an abortion!

i also belonged to the packing club for the fn for a short time- needless to say, i love my M14- typically, i would get one where the rear sight would FALL down when doing a burst- or you burn your hands on the barrel, cause you forgeot where to grip it

you fella's sound like you might have been in the militia. and by the sounds of it your units wpns tec wasn't doing his job or you wernt reporting damage?
i have used the fn in cadets 79/85, and the reg's 85/87. 1987 is when the c1was replaced in germany by the c7.
never had a major problem. 2 things come to mind though. once on ex in graf, we were in a real sandy area and it was pissing down. couldn't keep sand off the fn. any way it jams. but atleast you could kick start the fn. simular thing. in pet during a winter ex with the c7. it warmed up then the temp dropped. the blot froze shut. my fault as i should have made sure it was moisture free. any way, i was screwed. at least if it had been a c1 i could again kick start it.
about the damage thing. we were issued are owne weapons in the reg's. it was are resposibility to make sure it was in serviceable condition. we were also i guess lucky to have 3 wpns tec in the unit.
i liked both rifles. good and bad things about both. by the way i totaly agree about the c2. should have kept the bren rebarreled to 7.62 like the brits, at least for a section lmg.
