Frustrated with Gun Club Experience

I would go back to the original range that is closet to your home and get a membership there. Who cares about a few rude idiots as you will find them every where in the world. Driving 10-15 minutes as opposed to driving an hour away just to shoot may very well lead you to loose interest. I had the same thing happen as there is 2 local ranges in my close proximinty. When I visited the first range and spoke to one of the guys in charge, I expressed my intrest in the rifle range, he then shyed away telling me that they don't really give memberships to people just wanting to shoot rifles, as they want people shooting clays and handgun. Seeing as you pay each time to shoot a round of clays they didn't see any more money to make off me other than my membership, so it was a simple ...see ya. I am now finding problems at the range I'm a member at and considering leaving it to go else where as both ranges are a short drive from home. You will for sure run into all kinds of idiots, don't be discouraged from joining as long as you can go and shoot and enjoy your time there. I am considering going back to the other range and joining under the assumption that I shoot alot of clays. Once I'm a member they will never see me shoot not 1 round of clays, only rifle, I guess it's the game I will have to play to get my membership.

^^^^^^^^
Impressive....

So, I understand that you are happy there
with all of their facilities, rules, etc.
Then, I think you shouldn't worry about how PoCo is considered by others,
as long as you like it, right?
And you shouldn't worry about how bad Ridgedale is
(since you already have a club where you are happy).

BUT:
I don't remember anybody saying that
they want to leave Ridgedale (or ANY other range) for PoCo.
However, I heard more and more people complaining about PoCo,
and they described it exactly like that: sh!thole
(and maybe other similar words).

...a gazillion ranges... wow...
but: you need special range cards. I thought so...

Heaters? ... wow... great...
At 20 bux for a visitor for three hours I think
they had to provide somepin
(beside the RO's attitude and the idiotic rules, that is).
Or who knows, maybe the heaters are
so they can accomodate the type of people PoCo catters to
LMFAO

"only $140" - cool.
Ridgedale membership is less than that
(but yeah, it doesn't have heaters).

But again, don't worry about what others say about your range,
as long as you like it in there. To each, his own.
As for me, I maintain my previous opinion about PoCo.

PS From what I understand, in 4 (or 5) years PoCo will be gone, right?
That's too bad - all those people left without a place to shoot
Can you imagine how many clubs will cap their membership then?
I bet many will do it even before (in anticipation).
Not to mention that very few ranges will be able to
provide the same facilities these peple are used to (heaters, etc.).

edit to add: oh, yeah, Silvester Road and
the gravel pits don't have heaters
(I feel so sorry for the PoCo people).

like i said shoot where you want to shoot, i'm just saying whats up at poco.

and for the 2400 members up there i'm sure that some still have there opinion but theres still 2400 members..

IF you think its four years, it must be true. but if it is four years why not have a good time.

yep thats right we have HEATERS... nice and warm..

rules hmm lets see. dont point your gun at the guy beside you and make sure your shots are on the back berm. hard to follow?

I'm not here to banter back and fourth but every one has a range they like and i like PCDHFC

but i also like shooting at TMSA and DVC. I havent shot any where eles to comment on there range so i wont

were all here to shoot so why fight about it. we all like doing the SAME THING
so why fight about it. Why split our community over what range is better.

its like fighting over whos shoes are better. doesnt matter what gun you have. it all does the same thing

Let me get this straight, club #1's caretaker gives you some attitude so you decide to pass on the club? (You're going to judge an entire club on the actions of one person in one conversation on one day? You've never had a bad day and treated a stranger rudely, huh?) And club #2, filled to capacity but with an out-dated website, passes on your membership in much the same way that you've passed on membership in club #1, so you feel unwelcome in the sport? Is that it? The reception wasn't as warm as the one you got at your country club interview, I guess.

It sounds to me as though you're accustomed to being treated as a Prince. The thing is, we're not used to being around royalty, see? So perhaps our manners are a bit common. Sorry.

How about giving club #1 another chance.

Ughhh excuse me? You've got a lot to learn about common courtesy, respect and first impressions. A little about business too. A paying customer deserves to be at least taken seriously. If my first experience walking into a club with my wallet hanging out and good intentions of meeting new people was to be rudely scolded away, it would leave a bad taste in my mouth too.

Wow what a long thread! Ive been following it as I'm new to shooting and am considering joining a club.

I have tagged along with friends to poco & ridgedale. I liked ridgedalebut its way too far for me. Poco, honestly scared me with some of the suburban commandos blasting away. While I know about it being public and all, but I just didnt feel safe shooting beside buddy who was emptying his 3 cheap norinco pistols faster than it took me to shoot the 5 in my friend's cz858 .

FWIW, since I'm only really interested in NR guns, I'll just get an FSR map book and a laser range finder then head off on my own rather than deal with some old coots stupid ettiquettes or people a bit over facinated withe whole click-go-bang thing.

you should ask the DOC about the range user course, and why it is still not being offered.
I'm a newbie looking for a club as well but I haven't considered anything but PoCo. My good friend and also my course instructor (the DOC) have had a great influence on my decision to soon join PoCo. I live in Langley to boot.

I'm a super friendly fella and I'm sure that wherever I go I'll find some like-minded shooters to enjoy the experience with.

If someone is a #### then that's that, I'll just leave 'em be and rise above.

Can't wait to get started!

Not a newbie. Been shooting since Grade 3; growing up in the country has it's perk's.
Living in the country again, bought some more cool toys; took up the habit again.
Our range is pretty casual; kind of a here's your key deal, doesn't seem like anyone has attitude.
First person you deal with is a Dickhead, that's a shame. Go with a member if you can manage; maybe everyone thinks he's a Dickhead....
Give it another shot

Alright... 3 ranges that I know are no BS in GTA area.

Silverdale (from what I read, basically pay and shoot everything with quick intro)
The Grange (Target Sports) (1 safety course and 3 probation shoots)
Oshawa Skeet & Gun (1 safety course and 2 or so probation shoots - but they recognize other club(s) and you're process to become full member is FAST)

I belong to the last two on the list.

Sorry to say I've talked to a LOT of snobs in the gun community. It's quite a #####.
There was this one ####### that used to work for DVC... but I believe he's fired now, so there's no need to worry about him anymore. I've dealt with rude shopkeepers at some of our gun stores, I've talked to patronizing bastards at the range with big egos (most likely because they think owning a gun adds a few inches to their #####es)...etc etc.

But forget about all those idiots... cause what you have here is a fun and unique sport that is really unlike anything else out there. So just sign up to a club, and kill some paper. Since you'll be shooting your .22 handgun, try DVC.

I had a half good experince at the one in Uxbridge in the GTA... I went to shoot some skeet and they had to of course have a member with us, which was fine.

first off it was bad some senior members kicked us out of the field we were in and when the member we were with explained we had paid all the other guys said was they didnt care.... so i said fine i dont want to cause any problems.

Everything after that was great the member helping us out was really friendly and was encouraging us to join. giving me and my friend some pointers.

later some other members made fun of my shotty saying it was cheap... sorry im not loaded and dont own a 2500 dollar o/u....

My girlfriend and I have belonged to the Peterborough Pistol and Revolver club for almost 1 yr and they are always accepting new members, the members and the executive have always been very welcoming and friendly. We are always accepting new members and I am surprised to learn that there are clubs out there turning people away.

Question to anyone whos been in both TMSA and PCDFC: How busy is TMSA compared to PCDFC? I am thinking about joining either of them and they seem both about the same, distance and ranges wise.

Generally, which one would you recommend?
(I am looking to eventually shoot with IPSC)

Wow - reading all of these posts has been an "education" about the gamut of clubs across Canada.

I have to say that my club - Oshawa Skeet & Gun has been quite good to me and I haven't had a bad experience yet. Now I know every club has their own internal power struggles on how to run the place and also their own version of the safety nazi that thinks they are better than everyone else.

It is however, the greater experience of the camaraderie within the club community that keeps me coming back.

I hope you find this within the clubs in the Lower Mainland.

mission rod and gun club

my friend and i also just got our pal and rpal and have gone gun crazy. We have since joined the mission rod and gun club. our first day there driving into the facility with a truck full of rifles and handguns was a little intimidating. We went to the clubhouse and joined with a year membership. The lady that runs the show there was great, she walked us threw everything and explained all the stations. So off we go to the trap and skeet ranges. we blew off two hundrerd rounds each.lol,We met some pros and they where more than happy to help us and even let us shoot there 5000 dollar shotguns.Off to the pistol range we went and another couple of hundred rounds down the range,we also met an oldtimer there that let us use his masterpiece gun which at 25 yards i could hit dead center, but not a chance with my stock glocks. The rifle station in which i would recommend good ear protection was awesome,,people are really friendly and safe with excellent comunication skills.Everybody is more than happy to help you out as long as you follow the simple rules.
