FTR Team Canada WINS SILVER at the Worlds

Hi

Just finished shooting the World's Individuals and it was a tough go with incredibly tricky winds. I shot today at 1000 yards with my rifle scope centered and held from 3 MOA right across the target to 3 minutes left twice in a 20 round match!!!

The overwhelming choice for F-Open is the straight or improved 284 Win shooting 180 Berger Hybrids. Probably most of the shooters were using a form of 284 Win. There were a few 300 WSM's and one 300 SAUM but they aren't the top choice. The top choice for F-TR is the 308 shooting heavy 200 grain bullets. There was only one 223 in the line-up and with these winds this is a very poor choice.

One guy was shooting a 300 WSM using the 230 Berger Hybrids but even he was having recoil issues and had to back off the velocities.

The US shoots differently than we do and the lower recoil of the 24 makes it the best choice. In Canada, the style we shoot opens up the choices slightly but not much as recoil is still the limiting factor.

Team has had some great results and will be bringing home medals on the individual side.

We are peddling fast on the team side with the last day tomorrow. The first day results will likely be up somewhere.

Wish us luck.

Steve, no 6.5s anywhere?

Hold hard,
Ted

There were very few 6.5's there. The .284, and .284 improved (in as many ways as you can imagine) seemed to rule here in open, as well as many heavy .30's in WSM and RUSM cases.
It is interesting watching a 230g bullet being launched at 3000 fps. On Americain gentleman told me he tried a similar load (at 2850fps) from a .308 on a bipod, but could not manage the recoil welll enough for string fire.

The 7mm's rule in the various forms. The Brits brought over their 7mm-300 WSM's or 7mm WSM's and felt they were the wrong choice for Raton due to case capacity. They felt that they should have brought 284's!! I saw some 7mm RSAUMS but the majority were 284's. Even the Brazilians were shooting 284's.

The issue is that the American's shoot "string fire" and when the conditions are right they fire as fast as they can. I shoot a 300 RSAUM and when I came off the line my barrel was untouchable due to heat.

BTW, the CDN TR team won the Silver medal!!!

The OZ open team won the match which pissed off our guests who put on a spectacular show!!

Yes the Americans are a competitive lot, when we missed the 3rd place in the world benchrest championship in vienna by a couple of tenths they were very relieved and we had many countries come up to us and tell us they wished we had finished 3rd in the team event

they are seen by many countries as less than gratious losers

Canadian FTR Team is bringing home the Silver from the World Championships 2013.

The Chou Brothers are absolute machines. Their wind coaching is truly World Class. Their focus even under very difficult conditions was amazing. Their support for team members truly humbling (Thank You BOTH !!!).

The other team members all stepped up in their various roles and delivered the goods. From precise and timely scoring (you know its good when they continue to thank you after the match is done), to driving into the center to machine gunning a condition to swapping out a rifle on the line, it was superb.

A pity the team on the line wasn't videoed cause it was truly amazing to see so many people working to be the best at every role. Raton is all about the winds and when you see a bunch of heads on a swivel reading everything from flags, to mirage, to moving marking tape translating it to a firing solution that leads to 5's and V's, you know their mojo is strong.

As with any pressure cooker situations, ups and downs occurred BUT the team kept together, kept fighting and maintained our position. For a brand new program, the result has been stunning to most every international team we met. A huge thumbs up to EVERYONE involved in the set up and organization for our team

In time, I am sure there will be plenty of pics and other info posted.

Please do not discount the enormous efforts also put forth by the F Open team. Raton range is a truly diabolical place and not many targets away could be like being on another planet. I know they gave it their all and their results are also superb.

Congrats on a fantastic showing guys...

For all that have interest in the F class sport, know that you will be meeting some of the best in the world at just about every provincial match. Come out, try it, learn, enjoy.

It is time to start planning for the next worlds in 2017. The world will certainly be gunning for us.

Hope all team members have a safe and uneventful trip home..... Enjoy

I don't think many people realize how difficult it is shooting shoulder to shoulder on an international line at a challenging range. That is a superbly commendable performance - congratulations lads !

Jerry congrats on the great finish. You and all your team members should be very proud of your achievement.

If you don't mind and when you have some time. Please provide more details about the Chou Brother's Wind coaching, I very intrigue in how they take you through your shoot What stands out about their coaching? Could you provide an example. When you're on the line competing as a team is it similar the circle training that is being done during the practices through out the year?

Well done gents! The Teams' performances are truly commendable, especially considering that you hadn't had much of a chance to work together before hitting the ground in Raton. Congratulations. I really can't wait to use the experience to build on moving toward 2017.

I fully expect international teams to start making the trip to Ottawa to get a feel for the range. This is a huge opportunity for us to make even more friends and contacts, as well a shoot with very strong shooters. That can only help raise our own game.

Lets keep the ball rolling!

Well done, Team Canada, and good on all the Canadians who travelled to shoot the F-Class World Championships in Raton. It's a great place that really should be on every shooter's "bucket list" to shoot on at least once in their lives.

I can't wait for our shooters to get safely home, and for the stories and tales to start trickling in
