Gaining ground. Hunting will not stop wild pigs invasion in Canada.

Pig Island Park

You know one thing about wild boars is people like to keep their hunting areas hush hush when they are only doing a disservice to the environment and other game species by not letting others in on the hunting. There's far more pigs than what hunters could ever shoot and now this is the end result of that selfishness.

This is a national park, no hunting allowed. Obviously you don't really understand the problem.

About ten years ago there were a few reality shows about pig hunting in the U.S. and it’s clear they are hard to hunt to keep populations down. Many are nocturnal, they can eat anything, they have thick hides that allow them to travel through thick, thorny underbrush and have a better nose than a dog. Like a rat, for every one you see, there are many more that managed to hide from you.

They will be terrible for farm land, but I wonder if the impact will be different throughout this country .... like these boars are huge in Russia, but they have wolves, tigers and bears to prey on them. We don’t have tigers, but we have those other big predators and down south a lot of the states wiped out their big predators. I could see them possibly having less impact in some areas in Canada due to predation.

Maybe we should follow the Australian model, if you have too many mice, you let loose tons of cats, if you have too many beetles, you let loose tons of cane toads .... so if we get too many wild boar, we would certainly need more tigers? Lol

Never seen any up here in northern Alberta, but I suspect the ample wolf population is keeping the numbers low

There were a bunch that escaped up clearhills north east of worsley, a bunch just south of Peace River, and a big population in Deadwood.

The ones just south of Peace River got dealt with immediately by locals. The owner let everyone know immediately.

Deadwood ones took 6ish years to get sorted out, but if you’ve been to Manning, you’ll understand my comments that the population exploding was never gonna be an issue.

The ones up in clearhills, the locals keep a pretty good wrap on. My old apprentice moved on so I dont get to see facebook photos of the latest one his buddy has shot.

Obviously, missed that they survive in Russia. Why would anyone think central Canada would be any challenge to them?

Ted

The last batch I seen while up at the hunting cabin in Deadwood basically went from low area to low area. They loveddddddddd the muskeg.

I had posted previously about a rancher guy in South East Saskatchewan - near Duck Mountain park (EDIT: Moose Mountain Park!!!) - eight or ten years ago (maybe more?) trying to raise concern about the wild boars on the loose - he had the local sounders holding his cattle herd from water source. He did a video - was on TV - winter - a couple guys on snowmobiles - a prairie slough - cattails, some willow bushes. A trip around showed not a single track in the snow in the field. His buddy drove his snow machine into that slough - the place exploded - must have been a hundred boars in there or more - under the snow - had tunnels, nests and chambers all through among the cat tails - had been rooting and digging out roots to eat - all under the snow cover. Gov't likely flew over with a plane and saw nothing - so there can't be an issue - why he made that video...

In 1997 the was an Indian Reserve due north of Winnipeg about 42 kms. Next to Selkirk. Infested with wild boar that thrived in thickets and black berry patches lots overhead interwolven foliage. Little tunnels for movement screened by the bushes.
Impossible to be seen from the air & situated in a hollow square of houses. Too dangerous for deer rifles. Too dangerous for shotgun slugs.

No dumbass, I know you can't hunt in the park, not once did I said "hunt in the park"

I'm talking about areas outside the park that hunters keep secret so no one else hunts "their boars"

If you have no reading comprehension unplug the keyboard and watch.

Every now and then you see post about guys in Sk saying they are all over, the same guys won't say where and "keep them for themselves"... Soon enough, that will prove to be a big mistake...

I live in the bush here and I've never seen any sign of them at all. Rarely you hear that a buddy, of a friend, of someone, somewhere, has seen one, but nobody I've ever met has seen anything.

Clear as mud right there. Don't defend when you get outed...just attack. Nice...Ad hominem is a great look when you are right...no, wait a second that is backward...

With an attitude like that, no wonder you can't find pigs. to hunt.
