Gas crunch on hunting

It sucks that it is more expensive but Hunting is my biggest hobby so I just gut it out and pay. Its cheaper entertainment than alot of other pass times. I feel your pain though.

I'm kinda glad gas prices are up, it forced me to cut way back on smoken & drinkin! so therefore it's not goin to affect my hunting pleasure at all. actually, I will feel like goin more often. Perhaps I won't have to turn around when walkin to them steep hills.....:dancingbanana:

Ruffbird.

For this years moose hunt I am leaving the pickup in the driveway and taking the wifes 08 cobalt. Once I get to Elliot Lake I will leave the car in my uncles driveway and head north in his motorhome. The drive from Verona to Elliot Lake in the car will save me bigtime. The rest of the trip will be split 3ways.

I got rid of my truck before last hunting season, and did just fine. I now have a Malibu Maxx that the seats all fold down, and with a big tarp to protect the interior, it has brought home 2 nice big does. We had to move in 2005 [flood] so we picked a house within 2K of work, and there is great bird and deer hunting within 5 miles. This has freed up money for motorcycles for next summer. We all can, "if we want" change some things we do to save a bit, and spent other places.

There's only so much gas on this stinking rock and I'm going to do all I can to burn my fair share...:D

I'm going hunting:dancingbanana:

A van is better than a truck. Get a few buddies to split the gas rather than go up in separate vehicles.

I've heard lots of guys come up with the same sentiment. But honestly, just how many guys do you want to take into your best hunting spots? Might have to bite the bullet and split with just one really good huntin buddy.

Do you have a separate de-watering set up before you put the oil in your truck??

I have a Diesel truck, family that owns a restaurant, and a big time supply of waste engine oil. I am starting to feel like a sucker for buying my fuel when I got 2 good sources of free fuel. Biggest problem is the emulsified water in both sources.

No de watering system.

You can do a number of different methods, easiest is what I do- Have my guys pour oil through a paper filter direct from deep fryer, into the collection pot. This removes most particles, and there is almost no water. Oil is cooled and placed in the orriginal jugs they came in, and left to settle for a week or 2.

Solids and any water (there isn't any that can be detected) sink to the bottom.I then pour off the top oil, and leave the solids at the bottom.

A better way is to use a suction hose to suck up the oil, so you have less waste, but I have so much oil I don't really care.

There are a few different filtering systems etc, and I may get some set up at one point, but this works for me. The veggie oil filter is an amazing thing- it cleans the oil perfectly. I may have to change filters once more per year at a cost of about $35, than if I had an elaborate filtration system, but I'm okay wiht that.

Thanx Greathouse, I wonder if that filter they got works on used engine oil too....hmmmm

I burn about 5.5 barrels of Diesel a month, even if I could cut the bought stuff down with minimal work to 4 BBls it be worth something.

The price of gas will not effect this hunt at all.If I can afford the guns, optics clothing, and gas and ammunition to practice all year, the extra $300 or so in fuel would not make me change my hunting plans.
However,I did buy a car two years ago to cut my fuel consumption in half for my everyday driving. Now the truck only gets driven to tow the boat.haul,go hunting,or when I need four wheel drive.

exactly. The deer/moose meat is already at about $1000/lb anyway, what's a few more dollars for gas. So what if it costs $10 or $20 more to fill the truck, it's a small portion of all the hunting expenses. Not going to stop hunting because of it. There are a lot of things I'd cut out before hunting, like tv, phone and possibly power and natural gas. Well, maybe not power and gas, but almost.

well i get maybe 10mpg with my truck and i put on 5,000km last year for hunting (all year worth) but that is all the truck is going to be used for so it is not that bad

this year i think i am going to park it and jump and my atv (or dirt bike)
