getting in shape for the hunt

Losing weight is a lifestyle change. Burn more than you take in. How you do it is up to you.

Good for you for dropping the smoking. I am 64, nearly 65. I stopped smoking a pack a day about 29 yrs. ago, and haven't drank for 38 years. I feel better now than when I was 25. I have never been overweight, but now have high blood pressure. I can control it with a pill a day. I inherited that from my Mom. This Spring the doc tells me I have asthma. I attribute my relatively good health to stopping smoking and drinking.

Extremes of any form of food dieting or exercising will be harmful, I'm sure. You seem to be doing just fine. Congratulations!

Seems like the posters before me have covered diet well. More vegetables and fruits, less meat and carbs. And eat as few processed foods as you can manage.

I think excercise is at least as important as dieting. I don't know your situation medically. I've seen a lot of older firefighters get back in shape using P90X. You use as much or as little weight as you want with very little equipment required. Go at your own pace and do the excercises that don't aggravate previous injuries.

Or very low impact would be swimming.

I cut out all wheat and my gut got a lot smaller and no more feeling bloated. After a month I didn't miss it anymore and lost about 10 lbs.

Try Yoga and don't laugh it is hard and will make you much more flexible. just search you tube and watch the videos, and do it with your wife if you have one.

It seems silly but you'll get WAY stronger and probably more centered LOL
Like the motivational poster " shooting is like yoga only louder"
Been doing it off and on for 12 years.
You can go to the gym and throw around weights to tear up your muscles or do yoga;hold , stretch and release to tear them.
Does pretty much the same thing, ironically.
Gym rats will argue otherwise but...I've seen grown men cry at my work, juiceheads make me laugh. All show , no go.
Try the yoga, no-one has to know and it's way cheap to try.
As an aside it also has the best looking women on the planet at your average class

When I go to the gym (not often enough, admittedly) I do a few yoga-like stretches I was taught to help loosen up. I'm 6'4" and about 350lbs- I'm a fat guy, no question. I can stretch cold, well past my toes and can do weighted squats getting my ass all the way to the floor and back up. I'm not as strong as the juicers, but I'm 1000% more flexible.

wow, thats some great stuff back there. i started today with some small changes.
no more wheat, low sugar, low salt, as i adapt to the change and gain some confidence ill add on a few more of the suggestions. in a week or so ill add a couple tools like a diary to track what i eat and a weigh scale to monitor weight gain or loss.
and im not going try hard on the weekends so as to ease the pressure of my personal commitment.

Thank God the rum and diet pop is ok !!

I realize there was some sarcasm in your statement, but a lot of stuff is said in jest. As such, I hate to burst your bubble... but Diet Pop is just as bad as (if not worse than) regular pop.

Why Artificial Sweeteners and Diet Soda are Fattening

jonny45 said:
so if anybody has any tips for losing 40 lbs or so i like to hear it,

A recent study shows that chewing gum can cause the inadvertent storage of fat -- similar to the artificial sweeteners, your brain tastes sweet and assumes there will be food coming soon... When none shows up, it begins a destructive cycle that ultimately ends in high blood sugar and the storage of more fat (or the creation of more fat cells, if all the available ones are full).

It's a simple thing that many might overlook.

yup, you're right. I had physio on my shoulder and this little girl had tremendous strength and muscled legs. I asked her if she did weights and she said no, I teach yoga classes. That's what got me onto it.
