Glock 17 - groups

more details would be helpful. what distance to start and what do you mean the gun is brand new or you are new to shooting handguns?

The latter - and sorry for the ambiguity. Im starting off shooting from 7 and 10 yard ranges, but can change that if need be to work on the fundamentals. Its just different going from benchrest rifle shooting to pistol where the groups seem to be automatically so much larger. I just want a yardstick to measure how much I currently suck by, so I can focus on improving to a specific degree.

No it was sortof all over the place. I'd say a 3" 'radial' group. This was my first time shooting it so I wasnt taking it especially seriously - it was more a matter of being able to see if my grip and stance passed muster, and how the recoil would feel. I definitely did ok - I dont have my target, didnt think to save it - but I didnt really have a frame of reference. Again its weird as a new pistol shooter - from that range I could have put any number of .22's through one ragged hole with my bolt action rifle - but I was comparatively 'all over the place' with 9mm.

I think for the next outing, when I've got a bunch more reloaded ammo, I'll try a straight 25yd grouping, then another at 15, 10, etc. and post them for comparison.

I have been shooting for over 30 years and at one time did a lot of handgun shooting. THese days I shoot handguns only once every 3 or 4 weeks - prefering to shoot long guns most times - but still, if asked, would have said that I thought I could shoot a handgun OK. Well, I recently bought a Glock ( G17 ) and, guess what, I couldn't shoot the bloody thing worth a damn !! I thought the gun was FUBARED until one of the experienced Glock guys dumped a mag inside 2" at 7 meters LOL !

So, as I am sure you will hear from others, shooting a Glock requires a bit of application - I have had to work on grip, wrist and trigger pull and only now after 3 weeks and about 400 rounds am I able to see what all the fuss is about with these Glocks. So, keep practicing and enjoy :)

Not to hijack but I have the same question as I just stared shooting my Glock 17 as well. At 10m I my groups were between 4-5 inches and shooting slight left of the point of aim. For the heck of it I decided to try 40 m and all my 10 shots hit a 2' x 2' piece of cardboard...but the rounds were striking top to bottom on the left hand side of the cardboard. Thoughts?

...hate to break it to you, but that's pretty average shooting.

I have never seen anyone shoot close to this well in any range visit in the last 7 years. Only on youtube. Im sure its possible and maybe even 'easy' to do. But to call it average is a huge stretch from what i see of the 'average' shooter.

At 7 yards? I agree wth Beltfed, averge but not better than.

Take Care

2" at 23 feet, 'average shooter' around here does at least twice that. Maybe pistol shooters on average here have less practice. But 2" groups are not seen too frequently. Hell I see people shooting their pistol off the bench at 7-12 yards. Lol.

The only respectable grouping is one that is smaller than ones from the week before.... regardless of whatever that may have been.

Well, I consider myself an average shooter.
5 and 7 yard lines are easy. 10 and 15 yards are some slight work, 20 and 25 yards are work, and 50 yards is a bit of a struggle.
My offhand groups at 25 yards are I think around 6-8 inches for 10 rounds.

It's all about hand and trigger control.
