glock or smith wesson

Very very tough call. I own a Glock and its great. Ive only shot 3 bullets from an M&P40, but I must say it is the best feeling polymer frame gun Ive shot. It feels like a gun,not like a brick in your hands. But my Glock is idiot proof and super simple. I don't know how the Smith is in that dept because Ive never stripped and cleaned one. I have been considering a .40 purchase and the S&W is pretty much at the top of the list if I go polymer.

I don't think there is any difference in the reliability of the guns so would go with the one you can shoot better. They are quite different in how they feel and point when you hold them. Personally, I prefer the smith but if I could shoot the Glock as well I would choose that pistol due to all the parts and service available for them.

I know I always sound like a broken record on this point but consider what you want to feed your .40. If you reload lead cast bullets, the stock M & P wins. If you spring for the replacement barrel for the Glock, it's a good choice for cast rounds.

If you are shooting factory or plated rounds.... then choose whatever catches for fancy that day.

Tanfoglio force might be another option to look at as well if you are looking at polymer framed 40's in the same price range. a bit more expensive yes but a nice gun.

Glock or S&W?

I have a Glock 22 .40 and a S&W 4006 also in .40.

The Smith is very nice, but I prefer the Glock.

Have handled the S&W M&P, in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45ACP. Not compelled to buy one.

lots of guys say start with a .22, i say start with a 9mm if you want to get really good. but the fact that you want a .40 is good to. its a big cal but if thats what you want then get it, just remember its costly and has more recoil that other choices.

with that being said i have a s&w m&p in 9mm and i love it. i have never had a single problem with it that wasnt due to my own reloads being underpowered. i put a new front site on it and a new apex competition sear set in it. the only complaint i have about that now is that the trigger is really long, but at least its crisp and smooth.

the last time i cleaned it was a few thousand rounds ago and it still works great. like i said, i havnt had a single issue with it yet.

as for the glock, i used to hate them, just because the feel and the cool aid factor but im now starting to warm up to them. ive even thought about getting a 17.

go try them both out and fondle them. go with whatever feels best to you.

I have Glocks, and I have M&P's. Many new shooters prefer the feel and the trigger of an M&P. The Glocks are more reliable.

I've shot Glock in 9 & 40. Was very impressed with the trigger and overall feel of shooting considering I started on .22 buckmark. Impressed with the feel of the m&p with firing one yet, but would lean to the Glock for parts possibility and the .22 conversion cost effectiveness.

More than a few Police Forces swtiched from Glocks to M&P's :p

That's hard to go by though. Budget is a big driver in these decisions and if two similar (and both high quality) pistols are being considered, the one with the biggest discount will usually be the one selected. Most Police departments have the same guidelines for responsible spending as other city departments.

Since Glock is now copying S&W with the interchangeable grip inserts there isn't too much difference in the two other than the S&W has a fully supported chamber and can use cast bullets in the factory barrel if you so desire.

Larry Vickers, and others, have noticed a lot of people that moved from Glock to the M&P, are going back to Glock.

He also made the comment that 'S&W snatch defeat from the jaws of victory' with the M&P (paraphrased).

Vickers did also comment:

"For the overwhelming number of people who feel like they need to have a .45 the only two real choices are the M&P45 and the HK45 and push come to shove if I’ve got to trust my life to one or the other, it would be the HK45."
