That is the real challenge with deer hunting. Especially mule or blacktail deer...Big bucks are a challenge.

90 ft/lbs of energy for a projectile with no cutting edges - relying solely on what is essentially a blunt force?.....? Should leave a nasty welt, might even break the skin. Depending on your elevation, you could develop a load closer to 1000 FPS, which brings your ft/lbs at the muzzle to 1K and still avoiding the most of the rifle report.

Hey Hakx,
I'll give you $1000 if you let someone shooting you in the ass with that load. $1000 for a welt and some broken skin? Come on, I dare ya!
This is the stupidest idea I have ever heard of. As nearly everyone has said, and certainly everyone intelligent has said: This is not ethical, nor is it going to work. You're going to punch a 45 cal hole in some poor deer and it's going to run away and die in someone's yard because the bullet had no energy on impact.
You are a sorry excuse for a hunter, and I hope they can find something to charge you with when it's all said and done. Pathetic

Why would you feel bad about killing a small deer? Weird. I feel bad about killing big bucks...

i have one experience that may or may not be relevant to the discussion......
I once killed a goose with a load that was propelled with the primer only. No powder ignited.
The squib load was a result of a poor fitting wad, i found out later that several shells in the lot had misplaced powder that had migrated past the wad to mix with the shot. They were stored nose down in a tray and had ridden a long way in my truck.
I was having a good shoot, we had taken lots of geese already when a flock of ross' came straight in, very low. I decided to shoot even though they were actually too close, my plan was to take one in the head or miss completely. The bird was about 15-20 feet away. At the shot, the gun went pfft, and a ball of shot ( 1-1/4 oz of #2 bismuth) left the barrel and smacked the goose like throwing gravel. The dazed goose dropped at my feet. I jumped out of the blind and wrung it's neck.
It wasn't pretty, but i may be the only person to shoot a goose with a load of shot going even slower than 400 fps. One more detail - the wad stuck in the choke.
I'd have reservations about trying your 400 fps load on deer, but concede that sometimes things can turn out ok even when you'd think the situation impossible. I'd only caution experimenters to balance the thrill of discovery with the responsibility for ensuring a humane kill.
Use a bow! Dont get much quieter than that.![]()
