Good semi-auto "hunting" rifles?

Personally I think that the gun mechanism is a question of preferences: period !

My main Deer hunting tool is a 270 cal Savage bolt-action with scope. I have good success with this rifle, since it is very accurate for long range shooting and powerful. I also use a 7.62 * 39 SKS with iron sights for hunting in bushes area because this gun is compact and sometime yes a second shot is needed;) . I just bought a M 305 and will surely use it for Deer and Moose hunting since it shoot’s 308. I also use a black powder Tradition rifle in 50 caliber with very good success. I think that all those rifles are serving my purpose of getting game. So what is the point ?

After the handguns ban, the next thing Wendy and the Liberals are going after is a Semi-Autos ban in accordance with the U.N. small arms proposals…So let’s remember this and not divide ourselves on the issue….

I doubt the open sights can be had for 100$ installed.
I also doubt that the Stevens will be taking much of an advantage over the 'rinco with open sights. On contraire.
Also an argument could be the potential of the NM upgraded M14s compared to the best Stevens' will ever see.
Just making a point. Never argued that by any means a semi is better than a bolt for the sole purpose of hunting.

Exception would be if you're stationed near Krueger Park and the elefant culling season is in. Then - a proven - a semi 7.62x51 is quite adequate. 47 FMJs do a good job . Almost as one 375 H&H.

AAAA they don't tell the animal lovers that they have to do that almost every year in the famous park. The herd gets so big that they destroy the forrest and the sustainable habitat for all of them. Plus the attacks on all that moves in what used to be called "elefant crazy" - term dropped to "postraumatic stress" by the treehuggers. And as there is no hunting in the park ... the "rangers" or the army have to do. That's how I found out that Heckler & Koch is a good choice for the "tuskers" if you're carying a battle pack of ammo. - wich they do.

in a former life-I worked in a Remington warranty station-my observation was that the vast majority of "jamma-matics'-be they 740's.7400's,or 7400's were restored to firing condition after a polishing of the chamber to take out the pitting left by lack of cleaning-the fired brass would expand into the pits and fail to extract-.308's seemed to be the worst-corrosive mil-surp practice ammo??-commercial S/A's are not built to mil-spec standards and are unquestionably more fragile-take care of them and they will for you-FWIW

P.S.-had an SL-7 and an M1A previously-both in .308-far superior reliability [even if the HK did beat the @#$% out of the brass] than any commercial centrefiire I have owned-took the M1A deer/moose hunting-heavy?yes-totally reliable/successful-yes!

I have been looking for a ShortTrac in 308 for over a year now. The answer has always been: "they will be shipped in the new year" and that was over a year ago. I get the same answers last week.

Has anyone seen a ShortTrac .308?
