Gopher shooting, Do you guys have rules to follow?

They're only gophers no need to fret over them there are plenty to go around in some area. When me and my buddies shoot we start off shooting together and then we walk off in our own in different direction keep tabs on each other. Then meet up again at the truck to reload and have at the dust rats together. I like to film so it's no big deal if he shoots a few more gophers than me.

I agree and see it as friendly competition. Usually plenty of targets to go around. Relax, and enjoy it!!

Lol, yeah! We usualy call out. look at each other. Give the nod. It on!

If its gets real one sided, like I hit 3 gophers in a row, then take a break. Load a few mags. Insted of being a silent grump, just say something.

I was raised to believe that manners and consideration of others actually matter. Gopher shooting is an informal sport, and there are usually plenty to go around so there is no need to formally take turns or keep count of opportunities, but stealing someone else's shots is inexcusable. I must be terribly old fashioned and out of date, but from some of the comments that I have seen posted on this subject I can't think of the posters as anything but selfish a-holes. Pretty sad when shooting gophers with an invited friend becomes a "me first" competition. Most people learn this stuff in kindergarten. Some never get it.

We call it "poaching" when you shoot other guys gophers. For guys that grew up doing it it is a fairly common practice in my group of friends/family. Heaven help you if you miss as that's just a spotting round for the better shooter(s).
For guys I'm introducing to the sport/kids/less experienced shooters I spend most of the day spotting for them as that is just as much fun as shooting in most cases.
As mentioned the rules should be laid out beforehand to avoid butthurtedness.

Only been out once, with Fassteel and Ice Hunter. They let me do lots of shooting. They were way better than I at spotting them first, but they would just point them out so I could take the shot. :) Fun times.

Lighten up! If he is new to you and you find him stepping on your toes or if he is a new shooter altogether, let him shoot. There are generally lots of the little rats and you will go again. Eventually everybody gets self conscious when they realize they are having all the fun.

Thumbs up! That is the way I grew up. Even when gopher shooting, I respect the other shooter. Some of the responses I`ve heard so far....I`d like to be with them when they are on the last day of deer season and they need to fill that tag. Jump out of the truck and let a shot off in the ground and look at them and say: "What? Were you not quick enough?" Its just a point i`m trying to compare...it comes down to respect. I guess I`m just from the older era. Looking at the kids now a days.....they were never taught respect.
Its the same as coyote hunting: When I`m the passenger and see one on my side, it isn`t much fun when the driver piles the brakes on and its a "speed test" on who can hope out fast enough and get the coyote. Thus the gopher topic I made.

I can't see anything wrong with going out shooting gophers alone.... Lots of times, other shooters are working or otherwise occupied. I love the solitude, peace and quiet. I also get a kick out of watching others blast away. The guys I shoot with are open to taking turns, sort of, if we walk together. Nothin' better than a good gopher shoot. :)

Ah the memories of them 55 grain spsx's being driven out at 22-250 velocities in +30 degree temps. The contrails they were leaving were awesome..Betcha dollars to dognuts I could find the exact spot of all the video!!...LOL...

Simple rules to follow...

1...dont shoot me and I wont shoot you

2...dont shoot my damn truck box, remember that your scope is 1 inch above your bore,so close in gophers arent liable to be hit as you shoot across my truck box and put a round thru my truck rails.

3...see that horse over there....dont shoot it...

4...See that there prize bull over on the hill worth 25K...dont shoot it either unless you have a great big bank acct to follow up on your ooppssy...By the way the steaks wont be really tender after your screw up.

5....see the friggen house 150 yards behind the gopher that you want...DONT SHOOT....there could be kids n the yard that cant duck real fast.

6...always ask for permission on any ones land..

7...The passenger always gets out and opens and closes the gate. You arrive and the gate is closed, passenger gets out and opens it,you drive thru and the passenger closes it behind then jumps back in the vehicle.

8..in the event of multiple vehicles pulling in to a 1/4..The passenger gets out, opens the gate and all the vehicles drive in,the passenger then closes the gate.

9...A bbq is always required at noon for food. The host should have this covered..

10....Have fun....and dont shoot at anything you cant afford to pay for...

Yup, like the saying goes: When you see 3 farmers in a truck, the smartest one is in the middle! lol

I like icehunter's list of simple & straightforward rules.
As for the OP, don't go with the same guy gopher shooting, (notice I said gopher shooting) if it bothers you that much. Or just pick differing areas to shoot is a no brainer.
Complaining about the minor issues of who shot what, how fast, is kind of moot don't you think?

10 rules for a good gopher shoot

So your buddy is a faster and better shot then you and your butt hurt?

...did your mom make your friends "let you win" at video games too as a kid?

I used to run the EGO outings for gopher shoots out here. Some of you folks might remember it(Edmonton Gopher outings). This is how I met Grizzaxemann,Prosper,Fassteel,Gatehouse,Blacksmithden, cant forget 308bar and canuck 75 who drove out from Vancouver 2 years in a row just to shoot gophers.Thats why the vid that 308 bar posted I know exactly where its taken at.I hosted the shoots and as such,I gained permission from all the farmers to access there land. Ultimately it was my azz in a sling if there was a screwup. There are other members in here that came out but I just cant remember there user names in here.I probably had 40 different shooters from CGN in total. One simple rule was this..

When we pulled into a pasture and were getting ready to shoot,it was a super fast tailgate meeting.Since I have lived here all my life I know the lay of the land, hills and housing and such.I would tell everyone where everything was, even a house 2 miles away over a hill,I would tell them that if you are shooting west there isnt a house within 4 miles or what ever.I had to know all this ahead of time.I had to know where the cattle would be at b4 hand.I had to know where all the gas wells are and pump stations and all the fun stuff.I made a lot of phone calls ahead of time to get permission which has now grown to over 38,000 acres for shooting on.An yes that is 38 thousand. There was only 2 screw ups that happened that a life could have been lost, but those shooters were sent on there way and never invited back again. But they did get a good azz chewing from me b4 they left.

But seriously, its gopher shooting....you are shooting a friggen varmint. Its not like you paid 15k for a 5 day hunt, time off work and the wife left alone for 2 weeks.Who cares if you miss a shot and your bud beside ya hits the target? Are you gonna burst into flames? Pity party perhaps? Do the same thing back to him,he misses and you tag it.Thats how you get your eyes used to finding targets in grass. What happens if a dust rat runs across the side of a hill,3 shooters see it at the same time..do you draw straws to see who gets the first shot? Screw that, every one opens up on it. I have done lots of hours of just spotting for my friends, find a squeak, tell em where its at and let them shoot it.I can drive 5 minutes and shoot them every day.To me its funner to let them have the shots while I call them for them.

If any one was to come out shootin gophers with me,and they missed oh say 3 shots on a gopher, that was standing there....then they drivelled about how I shot it on them. I would suggest that maybe knitting would be a better thing for them to take up...

Bring guns.
Bring ammo.
Bring friends.
Have fun.
Be safe.

The rest you have to work out amongst you and your friends.

I've only ever had to have words with one of my friends.
He was shooting at the Killdeer. He didn't come shooting with us after that. It all sorts itself out.

Cheers
Trev
