Have you pinned your firing pin? I found that reduced flyers considerably with my T....

HI-jack in progress
here are my mods:

GM 18" flutted Bullbarrel
Revival Yukon stock (blue)
Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25X50mm
VQ bedding kit
VQ hex take down screw
VQ extractor
VQ extended mag release
VQ auto bolt release
Skeeter's Pre-Adjusted Hammer and adjustable Sear kit w/ oversized pins
Weaponkraft bolt buffer
Rocky Mountian 6-9" bipod
Weaver scope base
Burris Signature Zee rings with Burris pos-align insert kit
Bolt rework by randy @ CPC (pin firing pin, http://community-2.webtv.net/RandyAtCPC/CPC1022BoltRework/)

I think it's the ammo or shooters fault, The only other improvement I could forsee for this rifle is a complete bedding job.

Thx - for those pics goose,

yeah I am calm now :D - you guys are right - I have a accurate 22 and should really have a scope on it.

I went out for some gopher after dinner yesterday, I pulled up to a new 1/4 section I'd never been, I drove to the top of a hill and saw 5 scurry. I instantly felt I was going to have a good time.

I loaded up and figured with the abundance of gophers just from driving up that I would need the 25 rounder, and a few boxes of ammo in my pockets.

There was a fair bit of dry stubble - I could hear the gophers warning calls. as I walked to a high ridge to shoot down into a major patch of holes.

The end result: 0 confirmed kills and only one attempt. The place was crawling with them but they never came out of their holes like I am accustomed to - (you know when they stand up[?) There was a lot of dead stubble 4-6 inches high which made it near impossible to see. The mounds I could see no problem and if they were to stand up it would be easy.

I took a walk around the section stopping in different areas... I could hear the warning calls going off like mad but couldn;t see any gophers. I made my way back to the vehicle and got my binocs. This helped to spot a goper - but as soon as I had to drop the binocs to shoot I wasn;t able to pick up the gopher in the stubble.

It became apparent that as much fun as the dot may be, it may not be practical for the task. I am going to order a scope from Marstar this week.

When is the best time to shoot these varmints? I remember it being easier than this. Last night I went out at 5:30 and it was windy again and maybe 13 celcius. What weather is best?

Mainly I am going to try and fin pasture that is active. The stubble made it impossible to see anything.

I think I might mount a spotting scope on my 22 -that should help my vision.

I have some modelling paint - I can paint my own reticle on the glass. get creative

seriously though.... what is your budget for a scope? what scope did you have in mind?

Well I want it to be silver and have a sun shade. Also a dot sight would be a plus

I think $200 is my max on this one, maybe $300 if I get the impulse - the idea of learning how to read/use a mildot kind of appeals to me.

Don't forget to add a gopher call, wholesale and russles should have them (though last I hear they were out of stock). What we usually do is once we have a suspected spot (visual or lots of chirping), sit down and chirp on the call they will start to come back out of thier holes or stand up. As well as the call works I think the major key is to have the lowest profile and still maintaning good shooting vew. The theory is they have to expose themselfs more to get a view of you offering a better shot. And they are also less likely to pick you back up and go back to scurrying.

thx I was hoping for some tips, I'll pick up the call for sure then - maybe a ghile suit won;t hurt :) - get on my belly as crawl! - I think I was a little too intrusive on their area - next time I will stay low.

I was looking at some Mueller scopes - The silver Eradicator might be the ticket for me. Do you guys know anyone who has these? They have several illuminated dot scopes...

thx

contact PHIL at http://www.whitefalls.ca/ he will hook you up.

now I need a reliable source to get one from... The only Canadian rep has a half broken website and the mfg says they won;t ship to canuckistan.

Is that yours goose or just a web pic?

I found a site that sells them for $147 US ... thats a $100 less than Muellers MSRP?

I sent him an email already... is that dot highly visible in the daylight? if you turn the brightness up?

I am an impulse buyer... so I decided I couldn't wait. I took the scope off my black special (its a QD) and mounted it my 10/22T. Its a Simmons Aetec 2.8x10x44 - I like it. Its not silver though and doesn;t match my stainless barrel.

after dinner I decided to go out and visit the gopher field and sight in for 25 yards. The wind this time must have been about 50 km/h. I didn't have a rest either I still managed to hit the target center but I'll need to sight it again in calmer weather - I wasn't concerned about the bullet... the wind was almost knocking me over.

As for the gophers - I read they came out at sunset ??!? and in the morning... well the sunset wasn;t true - maybe because it was 7 deg C and intense winds they stayed in their holes. After waiting for a half hour I took a walk to stir up some danger calls, nothing, total silence. Soon I'll find a day that they are out. Right now I have determined cold windy days even at sun set are not what they like.

I am going to try again tomorrow so hopefully my luck will change.

PS Mueller has a new site up - much nicer, and the $147 was for the 3x9x40 / my error

F7 ...

Good, you put a scope on.

Now, take a 5 dollar bill and push it between the barrel and stock. Slide it back and forth from the front of the stock to the action. If it binds up, won't slide at any place, the stock is likely touching the barrel, which is not good.

Use some sand paper wrapped around a dowel or broom stick, or sanding drum (near barrel dia) to relieve enuf wood to let the barrel float free. Seal any open wood with clear. This should help, andCan't really hurt... thnx Goose)

I noticed you live in a cool windy place, this does make 22lr shooting a challenge.

now that you have a scope, go out there and try different ammo, until you find what your gun likes best :)

It would be interresting if you posted the before (red dot) and after (scoped) target pics. You/we will definitly see a great improvement.

edit to add: NormB's advice shouldn't be disregarded.

Goose,

for your flyers, if you know you didn't pull them (i.e. they aren't your fault) then they may be wind or ammo faults.

Basically only match grade (premium) ammo will be consistent enough not the throw the odd round. So consider CCI Green tag, Eley 10x and their lesser priced practice ammo, Fed Gold match etc... Regular 22 will throw flyers due to inconsistent ammo, as much as 10-15% of rounds in the more common loads.

Enjoy! You may also find something like CCI velocitors work well and may be more consistent than regular 22 and might be better in wind.

I was using federal gold match. and I'm pretty sure I wasn't pulling them, wind... maybe? I got a whole summer ahead of me to find out, and to perfectionize (my word) my shooting.

Thx Norm, I'll check the clearance when I clean it ,

We went out today and there were a few gophers out but I failed to hit anything - new location - very windy but hot, I realized my sight in job was not very good when I tried to hit out to 100 yds - seemed to be spot on when I was at 25 yrds when I sighted it but now I realize I sighted in on an incline.

Generally it was a battle for me to spot the gophers unless they move and then to try and get a shot away before my 2 shooting partners saw the gopher.

Also my BC 25 rounder steel lips kept jamming. - time to read all the tips thread and maybe visit rfc.
