Just finished the first clean/rust removal.
Started with a brake cleaner bath and scrub (there was cosmoline on the bolt and hey why not do every metal part)
went to nylon brush and hoppes number 9 (not much change)
then to brass brush and number 9 (much better)
took out the steel wool (oh dear lord the rust)
ragged and washed after (so much number 9)
hour and many, many patches on the barrel (much less rusty then I thought at first)
oil on the wood and all moving parts (at least the stock has stopped shedding)
With this I am going to try shooting the rifle, it ain't pretty but I think it will work.
Pitting is bad in many places, but overall I am hopeful. Any one have any info on perma-coat / oil bluing?
Will update with how it shoots and more pics after shooting and cleaning the corrosive ammo.
I am blown away, the Ammo Source definitely stands behind what they sell. I am told that another mosin is on its way to me after review of the rust in the pictures.
This is amazing service. Next time your going to order something online consider:
-That SFRC did not have to send another rifle (I never asked, and did not expect it)
-SFRC responded professionally and quickly (same day I got the rifle) to a public forum post not directed at them (I never contacted SFRC directly)
-SFRC cares enough to address things on the weekend (nothing sat until Monday, after hours work was put in)
I have to say the effort put into a 78 year old rifle that sold for $175 is whats going to keep me coming back.
Thank you so much Ammo Source.
Just finished cleaning from some time at the range.
Shot 120 rounds, had 2 hang fires (fixed by adjusting the pin a half turn), some issues with the mag (will not chamber if only 4 rounds, and some times first round gets stuck) and the top cover likes to run the the front of the rifle (the lower ring is too wide to "click" into place).
So here are some pictures of the rifle after much cleaning some shooting and more cleaning.

Its not the best looking rifle, but it does work.
Next step is a wire brush/grinder on a rotary tool and some paint.
