Got my mosin and ammo today/ my hubris is my downfall

I am amazed that this shot as well as it did. They sure don't make them like this anymore. Just think of what an AR would look like after 78 years, let alone used and abused for 78 years.

I will put pics up of the new mosin on Friday (UPS don't fail me now). May even take it to the range on the weekend and compare the two mosins, anyone interested in seeing the difference between these old shooters?

Yes, I am.
That thing really is in bad shape.

After reading your posts I was re-examining one of my SVT-40s. It's pretty clear that it had significant rust on the outside of the barrel (under the upper handguard) and this was remedied when it was arsenal refurb'd. Those Soviets did a good job on it...they must have missed your Mosin though.

What's the bore like? Bad, I presume...

Actually, not as bad as the rest. I could not get a good picture of it with my homemade phone camera but there was a little rust and the patches where coming out green and blue for a while. The crown looks good/ok.

I would say the receiver area and barrel are several times better then the rest of the rifle.

Sweet, just got the bayonet on and filed the rear ring down so it "clicks" (no more top stock running away).

next is sanding and refinishing the stock I think.
