Hammer fired polymer pistols. Your thoughts?

I'm a big fan of H&K hammer-fire polymer-framed pistols. I currently own a USP in .40 and a Mk23 in .45 ACP and prefer them to the more modern P30 or HK45 models (although I am in a bit of a minority there!). I also owned an FNX-45 Tactical which I found to be very accurate and comfortable to shoot.

I have some Grand Powers. Well made with better than average triggers.

I have never really looked into Grand Power. But there seems to be a lot of positives with them. Any issues trying to get accessories. I know nothing is as simple as getting Glock after market products. I always appreciate the info.

No, there isn't much for accessories out there for them. Mainly just OEM parts. You're better off getting a Grand Power X-Calibur, as you will get adjustable sights, or the Xtrim which has better sights than the stock 3 dot found on the K100s

Not sure how much support there is for Grand Power right now. The Canadian distributor was shutting things down this summer. Not sure if he was turning it over to someone else, or what the vision looks like for the future of Grand Power in Canada. His note on facebook was:

“Dear Friends, I’m afraid it’s time to share the news. I’d like to thank each one of you for your support, but I’m shutting down operations.”

Hopefully someone carries the torch going forward. Big thanks to David for doing what he did.

There are not a whole ton of options out there when it comes to hammer fired polymer pistols, and even less if you want one with a DA/SA with a safety for condition 1 carry. My favorite would have to be the HK USP c in 45 and the USP 9mm. I have tried out the newer generation including the 45, 45c, P2000 and the P30. I am not a fan of the new grips at all. And I really dislike the weird decocker on the P2000 and P30. The only one I really like out of the new gen is the 45C. I would go USP any day of the week.

I just bought a Norinco CF-98. Chinese military pistol. Hammer fired, plastic frame, rotating barrel. $269

Ordered last week - arrived to day. Will shoot it tomorrow and report.

Trigger is SA is outstanding. Maybe 2 pounds. Seems well made.

I think with firearms ownership in Canada you are basically on your own for most thing including warranty work. In the US its pretty much opposite. Lots of options and warranty issues are looked after very quickly. I appreciate your post and I understand that I have made a unique pistol request . As I compile my list I am trying to find these pistols at a LGS or from a members at my range so I can begin the process of making a top "3" list. All you CGN'rs have given great info. Keep it coming.

I reviewed a few videos on this pistol yesterday and I look forward to your impressions and results. Is this a clone of another pistol?

It is not a clone, they way most other Norincos are clones of CZ, Colt or SIG. I don't doubt that the major design elements are ideas from earlier guns. The rotating barrel, for example, is not a new idea. I have a Savage 1907 with a rotating barrel.

Thanks Ganderite looking forward to your initial range report.

The HK 45 is the updated version of the USP, so if you want a USP go straight to the 45.

The P30L is basically the best thing out there in this category imo but I have a weird "thing" for it. Still waiting for the day I buy one.

Edit: Is optic ready a big deal for you on this pistol or not?

Good luck finding a P30L. Everybody out there wants a "John Wick" gun.

Well, I had my new Walther Creed to the range yesterday after giving it a good cleaning. I put 170 rounds down it, and another RSO at range put 30 through it (I wanted his impression as he has a glock 19 and Sig 320 to compare too). Zero failures with it (what I would expect), and felt really comfy in hand, but slippery. A stiple job will fix that. It took getting used to for me, as the trigger is vastly different then my Sigs with Armor Craft spring kits and short reset. It took me a while to get used to. My friend was very impressed with how light and crisp the break was on trigger, and said it was better then his polymer striker guns. The plain white dot sites work, but that would be something to upgrade. All in, I was quite impressed, particularly for the price point.

My last 5 mags at 7 yards, the flyers are on me, not the gun. I would call it an ideal first 9mm for someone getting into shooting.

I was able to put a few hundred rounds through a Creed. The pre-cocked trigger almost feels like a striker fired pistol. The grips are comfortable but they definitely need a talon grip or some sort of diamond tape.

Yes, those are the two main impressions I took away as well. But, it does feel like a *good* striker fired trigger. I think a stiple job with a soldering iron is what I'm going to do with mine, to get it grippy.

The high bore axis seems like a common complaint on them, but I have been shooting Sig P226/229/220 for a long time, and it didn't bother me. I found the Creed quite soft shooting actually, and also noticed my brass wasn't flung all over, dropped right beside me. It's not an X5, but it's also a German gun at a Norinco price point, so good value.
