Handgun Hunting In Canada

Hunt with a handgun?? In a heart beat, not only do I believe we should be allowed the right to hunt with one, but more so, the right to preserve personal life while participating in many outdoor activities that bring us face to face with Gods carnivorous and predatory creatures.

When your up to your arm pits in elk innards, your rifle of any dang cal. lying against yonder tree, is utterly useless, against a Gbear, breathing down your neck. A side arm, of respectable cal. is just that, always by your side.
 
The whole range only thing is rediculous with restricted firearms, why can't we use a handgun in the sticks for taking down a white tail? what the hell difference does it make whether it be a shotgun or a handgun?
 
I probably would never hunt with a handgun, dont blame anyone for wanting to though. I would love to have a sidearm on me when hunting, just in case.

Ever shoot a contender? Ever try to hit a pieplate at 200 yards with one? Ever shoot 300 yards with a 30-30 rifle?

A single shot pistol does not have the same capabilities as a rifle no matter how much you practice.

I have a contender in 35 remington. I've practiced quite a bit with it. Regardless of what I can hit at 200 yards with it, I would still limit my shots to 100, maybe 150 yards if I felt the conditions right. Hitting a piece of paper or knocking over some steel are two different things.

I've got other contender barrels, and an XP-100 in various calibers. When shortening the barrel and giving up some velocity, I would lean towards calibers that can fling a bigger hunk of lead towards the target, just like a shorter handgun.

I would love to carry a sidearm while bow hunting, or when hunting bigger game and in bear country(tracking a wounded bear with an enfield last year really proved to me how usefull short guns are)

In addition to rifles & shotguns I also hunt with a bow and each 'tool' has its specific limitations. While the range capabilities of a handgun are somewhat greater than that of a bow, it doesn't match that of a rifle. Knowing the limitations of your tool of choice as well as your own abilities I believe is the point joe-nwt has made.
Try the 500 S&W joe-nwt, you'll love it.;)
 
I appreciate handgun hunting offers a higher challenge and skill level required to get the job done. Its somewhere between bow and long gun hunting in that you are limited with power and range. I would do it for sure.

As for the shooting sticks comment with a revolver, never allow any part of your body to come in contact with the cylinder gap. Keep those thumbs crossed when shooting two handed - Gruesome safety reminder!

I believe it is legal to carry a pellet pistol (under 495fps) for the purpose of hunting small game - eg. grouse. I've heard guys talking about it but have never seen it done.

because if you could, the arguement that they have no purpose goes out the window.

also, don't underestimate how many hunters are against it (these are the ones that will support handgun bans, semi auto bans, etc, as long as hunting rifles aren't them immediate target).

I don't see the point of pointy stick hunting either. But I'll stand beside you should someone try to stop you from hunting with your pointy stick, or if they try to take your pointy stick away.:)

I do, did, and done.:) often we are our own worst enemy. I would love to hunt with a handgun. Likely more because I cant currently than any over and above merits a handgun has over a rifle or shotgun in the bush.

You are probably correct, there is just to many defeatists. I would like to try deer with a .45 colt in a Ruger Blackhawk. I would likely use a tree stand and hunt the same as if I was bow hunting.

Putting the same 45LC loads I use in my Vaquero through a trapper model, there was no problem 'punching' through a Deer in the 100 yd range.
