"Heads up" for Ontario Deer Hunters!

k, just a quick question, I plan to hunt area 88 with crossbow/bow and I plan to harvest either a buck/doe (s). My buddy said I can just go to service Ontario ANYTIME (like the day before the season) and get a buck tag AND a doe tag, and if need be through the season get up to 6 or 7 tags in total ( not like its going to happen, but i guess you can). If I am not mistaken you need to enter the draw to get a doe/antlerless tag am I not correct?, and in that case by 11:55pm tonight. If you don't then all you are allowed to harvest is a buck, am I correct? Its my first year and there a lot of rules but I just want to be safe and not be doing anything illegal, feel free to chime in! Oh and the line up for the draw at the local Service Ontario was like 15 deep, called in today and line was busy busy busy.

For 88 if you can get tags no worries. There is always a second draw in late July. WMU 88 has a ton of tags. So my recommendation to you is to wait until the middle of July and buy your tag when the phones open up if you can not get into the draw tonight. After the second draw any tags left end up downtown hamilton. 119 king street west. There are alot of extra tags for 88. Any questions just send me a pm. I live in Burlington and also hunt 88. You can go to service ontario and pick up a doe/ buck tag for 88 only once the first draw closes and then the second draw closes. Then an excess tags will be sold at the service ontario branches. 119 King Street is the closest location downtown hamilton. The phones lines open again for a second draw July 19. You will have another chance to phone in to pick up a tag for 88. Heck I may be hunting close to you. I am up in Stoney Creek hunting a property off highway 20.

I started this thread so none of my fellow hunters got caught short like I did 2 years ago. It's heartening to see the good responses from you all. Good luck to all of you in the coming hunting season!

Hunting deer in Southern Ontario sucks.
In Dryden (area 8) and surrounding areas you are allowed 7 tags ...one buck the rest does....I usually buy 3 tags.
I buy a buck tag in area 8 , then two antlerless tags . If I want more antlerless tags I hafta buy them for a different area, say Area 5 or 9A...but can only buy antlerless tags.
We have deer raiding gardens right down town in Dryden .

Missed the draw. Again.

Not going to lose sleep as I'm mostly bow hunting for bucks anyway, which is pretty much all I saw last season.

I wasnt going to risk canada post, so I drove straight to the ontario government building in guelph and dropped off my card directly into the ballot box. Piece of mind cost me $15 in fuel, but it was money and time well spent to know im shooting anything I want when im up north deer hunting.

got my name in for the draw!! its my first ever hunt, and am pretty nervous... so long as I walk out with all digits I'll be happy; happier though if i get some good meat!!

thanks to the OP for posting this, otherwise i wouldnt have remembered

Anyone baiting yet?....I checked my trail cam today and there was about 13 of them chilling 20 yards from where my blind will be, this is my first year and I am hunting out of 88, nice long bow season, I hope I get one.

No baiting necessary for me...My blind is 5yds from a corn field :D

I'm pretty lucky with my hunting opportunities here...I live in town (on the outskirts), I have access to a 200 acre farm that is a 3 minute drive from my house :). Its a bow only zone, but I love bowhunting.

The trail cams are up, and there are plenty of does making an appearance only a few yds from my blind.

Yup, I am lucky to have a corn and soybean field within 30 yards of each side of my spot, and a man made pond behind me, its like a fast food restaurant for the guys :) I haven't seen any bucks but a doe will do just fine and our cottage up north is on a 300 acre property and the land owner said there are more bucks than he can shoot at as he tags out all the time so he said I am more than welcome to have at one of the bucks ....I got real lucky for my first year, no going door to door and getting denied permission, its so hard to get permission, either they say no straight up or there are already 8 guys on the property.

Is it me or all the hunt codes for surplus tags this year are for Archery ?

Maybe Im just reading the document wrong.

Does anybody know when the draw results for southern Ontario will be made public? It's my first time so I'm a bit unsure. All the phone message said was that I would be notified by mail, and I couldn't find anything in the regs booklet...
cheers

As I understand it, we should hear by late August if we were successful. I'm glad my thread got out in time to be of assistance to some of you. My fingers are crossed for you all.
