Hi Guys

been shooting my ruger american rimfire for a while now and really enjoying it. I'd like to buy/build a shorter barreled 22lr with a heavy barrel. I see there is a heavy barrel ruger american but it seems to be only available in the USA. I am looking for a synthetic stock model. I also saw the savage mark 2 FV but not sure about the quality.

Ideally I'd like a rifle with a magazine with more then 5 rounds but I guess this is going to be hard to find.

What are my options for such requirements?

thanks!

I have the Savage fv and it is a tack driver, literally I will put up thumb tacks at 100 and see how fast I can get them. Loves the sk standard ammo

Your options are:

1. Heavy barrel Anschutz - Model 54 action preferred over the 64
2. Savage Mark II Accutrigger Heavy Barrel - Laminated stocks are probably better than the synthetic ones
3. CZ - More expensive than the Savage but not more accurate

Thank you guys!

Any accuracy difference between the Mark 2 FV and the FV - SR?

Having it supressor ready would not change anything for me unless there are other features im missing....

No real difference in accuracy. Shorter barrel will affect velocity that changes max distance and potential distance that wind becomes more influential. Most people shooting 22 will not notice the difference based on the distances they normally shoot.

Depending how short the barrel, yes it will affect velocity...

22lr I believe hits max vel at 16 inch barrels...

This is from my savage Mark 2 heavy barrel

Some guys say they do very well for small groups at 50 yards with a 2-7 or 3-9 scope and I tip my hat to them. Most target shooters prefer more magnification to clearly see the sub-half-inch groups they are trying to get at that distance. It also helps to see where the bullets are hitting to have higher magnification. I've used scopes that have up to 20X but prefer a little more.

A varmint barrel on a .22LR rifle has its greatest benefit not so much in any increase in accuracy accrued by a thicker barrel. The increase in rifle weight a heavy barrel gives a rifle helps as much, perhaps more. The sporter stock on most rifles is itself often a limiting factor as it is more prone to flex with both a shooting rest or a bipod. Some "varmint" .22LR models have a forearm that is a little flatter and wider to help it ride the rest or bags a little better, and that with a heavier barrel gives the rifle a little more stability for better shooting, especially at longer distances.

A regular sporter profile barrel can give just as good groups as a thicker barrel. Here's some results from my pencil barrelled CZ 452 American in a bench-friendly stock at 58 yards. The scope was a Mueller 8-32 at about 24X.

Thank you guys!

I believe the FV has the standard 21" heavy barrel. The SR has a sawed off and threaded 16 1/2" barrel for whatever. Not sure suppressors are legal in Canada... My view is that the extra weight and length of the 21" barrel is a benefit for accuracy, or we would all be shooting benchrest with pistols!

thanks!

couple quick things for ya.

i have a RAR and like you i really enjoy it!
there is no 'heavy barrel version' of the RAR, i even went and checked the Ruger website and there are only 3 models, normal, compact and wood - none of which have a heavy barrel. though the compact i guess kinda looks thicker than the regular RAR but that is just because of the shorter barrel i think.
so where are we now.....
short bull barrel bolt action guns.
not a lot of short bull barreled bolt action guns.
when most people go to a bolt action bull barrel its for one reason - accuracy.
and to that end they want a normal length barrel to get the velocity and bullet stability.

but i hear what your saying.
if i can put 2 guns forward for your consideration?

i picked up a Savage MKII BTVLSS to test out.
nice gun, double the price of my RAR but still a nice gun.

i recently picked up a CZ 452 American (now the 455) with a heavy barrel.
again super nice gun but double the price that i paid for my RAR.

both of them are more accurate than my RAR but both of them where double the price.

pics?

RAR followed by the Savage followed by the CZ.
id recommend any of them to ya.

I have 2 Leupolds, both VX2 models. One is a 6-18 x 40 AO, the other is 3-9 x 33 EFR, both with fine duplex reticle.
The 6-18 is a better target scope, but to be honest it never goes below 18x unless there's some restriction on the competition that requires a lower magnification.
If I were shooting serious target competitions, I would be buying a fixed power target scope, probably 24x or higher.
The only advantage I can see to a variable power target scope is the ability to dial it down to reduce mirage.
The 3-9 can focus as close as 10 yds, which is good for indoor 20 yd ranges. The 6-18 only focuses at about 23 yds and further.

Looking at the models you guys suggested. Does anyone know where in Canada we can buy the CZ 455 varmint in 22lr? Most seem to be either out of stock or in another caliber... Really like the look of this rifle and the quality does look to be better then the savage mark 2 fv

Prairie Gun Traders have a CZ452 Varmint in 22lr. I personally prefer 452s over 455s because my 455s were not as accurate as my 452s. Others have had very accurate 455s...
If you are after switching barrels in order to shoot other calibres like 17 or wmr, the 455 version is the way to go.

Have you considered a Savage mk II BV? great looking and feeling rifle. Haven't shot the one I just got but apparently very accurate. 10 rd. Magazines are half the price of cz ones as well. I agree cz machining is probably cleaner than Savage's.
