Hey gents,

So, I'm not exactly new to the firearms game, but I am thinking about jumping into the hunting game. I just got my licence here in SK (Northern) so theres tons of opportunity. My dilemma is (you guessed it...) which rifle to get. I've narrowed it down to two choices:

1. Ruger Gunsite Scout in 308 Win- 18.5" barrel
2. Savage 110 Scout 308-16.5" barrel (new accufit model)

I was leaning towards the savage but stumbled upon the old barrel length vs accuracy debate. I would be using it for predominately Deer and/or Moose (been told by some experienced hunters 308 is fine, it's shot placement that counts) and probably wouldn't be shooting at much beyond 200 yards (possibly more if hunting further south).

Any advice from you wise and helpful gentlemen would be greatly appreciated.

308 is fine for both those animals.
You’ll lose no accuracy from the shorter barre. Maybe a few FPS,but not enough to matter,in your range.

My buddy uses a Mohawk with a 16 inch barrel, for moose.
He never misses,and that’s a 2 MOA rifle, on a good day.

Handle as many new and used rifles as you possible can.

Purchase the one that fits you the best, keep in mind for big game hunting where you are you likely be wearing heavy clothes.

The shorter the barrel the louder the rifle will be . Due to the noise level a 18" -20" barrel length might be the better choice.

Wear hearing protection while shooting , especially with really short barrels .

I would say try to get your hands on both and see which you like more.

I wouldn't be worried about accuracy, both should be plenty accurate. 308 is plenty capable too. The differences will be how they feel, and as mentioned above the savage may be a tad louder. The savage will probably be 50fps slower, but individual barrels vary by that much so that'll be up to the individual rifle and might actually be faster.

Is there much of a weight difference?

Suther is right. Try them out and decide which feels better. Otherwise those two rifles are pretty close to neck and neck. I tend to prefer Rugers more, but that particular one is maybe uglier and almost certainly heavier than the Savage.

Compare price. Performance will be similar. When I priced a Ruger guide gun at $1700 in 375 and a CZ at $1400 in 375 I gave up.

Pick the one you like best, and roll with it. From a hunting perspective, you'll never wish you had a longer barrel while tramping through thick bush though. Getting off the bench and practicing field positions and snap shooting will do more for hunting success than the name on the side of the rifle.

Without guessing, how did you narrow it down to those two? Testing, trying, shooting, weight, manoeuvering, balance or price . . . who, what, when, where and why did you get lead in that direction. With so many more makes, models and combinations you still have time to look at many more.

Yes, the 308 is a great round for hunting. As far as the rifle is concerned, as others have said there are other choices for a good hunting rifle but of the two you mentioned the Ruger would be my choice.
I seen a new 77 MKII 308 at a local store for $680 last week. That was a nice rifle.

My guess would be he decided he wanted a scout rifle and can't afford a Steyr lol

i have owned a couple of savage scouts and currently own a ruger laminate scout with the 18.5 barrel. to me it would be hands down the ruger. mine is a good shooter and seems tough enough to club an animal with. bolt is a little gritty but i'm sure it will smooth out with use. the difference is dollars with the ruger being more costly.

If I was looking for a new 308, I'd go with Famae SG 542-1 or a ATRS Modern Hunter

You'd be different
You'd scare a few Liberals and fudds... :yingyang:

I own both a left hand Ruger Scout in both .223 and .308. I have shot 2 1/2" groups with factory ammo at 300yds with the .308 and regularly plink with PMC ammo at 400yds with the .223. So it has plenty of accuracy for the distances you will be shooting. I like mine. Get a couple 5 round polymer mags and it is a handy quick shooting rig. The butt stock on the Ruger is also adjustable for LOP and comes with spacers that can be taken away or added as needed.
