HELP PLEASE WITH SCOPE for new ruger precision rifle

Good to hear propliner but prefer the tactical line as I do more of that kind of shooting. May I ask where you grabbed yours?

Prairie gun traders. It was his last one in stock so I got it cheap. He can order one for I believe $1600, and he's a great guy to deal with!

What are the Burris XTR II running for here?

That they have enough confidence in them to send a team to PRS events is a good sign. Equipment takes a lot of abuse in PRS matches.

Barrel break in is a myth....and over cleaning of barrels just wears out barrells prematurely... Just shoot....
I have always broken in my barrels (please note, I do not use abrassives like with the benchrest method, the method I use creates far less wear and a more stable future carbon/copper deposit curve).
wether it's a myth or not is largely debated and irrelevant, I enjoy getting that intimate time with a new rifle :p. if nothing else!

it has always worked for me and I will continue to do it :) to each his own :)

If you get a barrel that copper fouls really bad youll want to do what you have to do to stop it. Dont call it a brake in if you dont want.

I skipped brake in on one of my guns because i wanted to see what would happen. It copper fouls more then any gun ive ever seen. It shoots great but the copper comes with its own problem. My area is fairly humid and the copper oxidizes (blue stuff grows on it). If you leave if for a few days you can shoot it with out any problems other then some wild cold bore fliers. If its a week or more sitting in the safe then i cant bring myself to shoot it because it looks so bad. So now i have a barrel thats much harder to get cold bore hits with because its either full of blue fuzzies or its been cleaned before the range day.

So in short, making your barrel not copper foul is important. I think thats what most people are talking about when they say brake in.

The barrel is the most important part of the equation.
Factory barrels are usually rough as hell inside. Chips dragged across the lands, pilot marks in the throat, lands that have a rough surface. Savages are appalling to look at with a borescope.
Coppering the piss out of a rough barrel like that actually makes them shoot better, up until you hit a round count where the bore is getting tight. Hence the current school of thought of not cleaning until accuracy falls off. Break in provides little benefit, as that copper is actually making your bearing surfaces more consistent.

A hand lapped shilen, bartlein, krieger, etc. is usually chambered in a professional manner so as to not leave any marks in the throat, and the lands are near flawless when viewed with a borescope. There are little to no voids to fill in with copper. These barrels like more regular cleaning to shoot at maximum accuracy. And break in is beneficial to lay down a little copper, without having it build up too much.
Of course these barrels are much more consistent and accurate than any factory barrel could hope to be.

They just started shipping and the season has just started. So, there isn't much data on them.

I did see two of them at the GAP Grind in October. I doubt either went down because word of that would have spread like wildfire.

That is a good start. I am sure more will be in service this season so more feedback. I am still several months away from my own scope and can't wait.

TT would be my first choice. But buying one would kill my match budget for the year, unfortunately. Second choice would be the Razor II. I could really like the F1 ATACR if they offered a better reticle. I really like the 5-25x externally, but I detest that Mil-R reticle and the Horus'. Every time I look through John's Mil-R, my eyes bug out. Hard to find the right place for a hold over/under, mover lead or wind hold quickly with it.

what is your opinion on scopes Jerry? for the 1600$ mark??

Well, as many know, I am very biased to the Sightron family of scopes in this price range. For me, optics and tracking are paramount... then I add in reticle and turrets... then ease of use and warranty.

Sightron fills all of these with much higher performance then anything else I have seen in this price point and arguably, at double the price.

For some end users, durability is #1 priority and happily live with "good enough" optics. I will concur that Sightrons are not the scope I would go to "war" with... That is not to say they are not durable. My current SIII 10-50 custom reticle scope has gone past 11,000rds of heavy bullet 308 shooting and I dial ALOT. Air travel, road travel, soft case, no case, bash in gun racks over the last 3 yrs... for a target scope, it is been through it all and done exceptionally well.

I am currently using it as my test scope to vet new barrels and components...

And yes, it has survived many a match on that wonderful US dust and dirt common to Western states... YUCK

Of course, the down pours of rain common to the Wet Coast matches.

For the vast majority of hunters, varminters and target shooters, these scopes are plenty durable. Big reason we don't hear all the posts about how good the Sightron warranty is... we just don't see many scopes. They just don't seem to fail under normal demands of precision shooting using all manner of gun up to 50BMG.

I think their lack of presence in PRS has alot to do with lack of desired features vs actual failure. Zero stop is a huge must have in this game. Sightron doesn't have any so a prospective buyer moves on.

FFP with Xmas tree reticles... not yet

So I feel the lack of presence in the PRS game will change if Sightron decides to make products for this game.

As many have already posted here and elsewhere, you will be very happy with the Sightron scopes.

I had a nice chuckle about the Horus reticle... drives me bonkers looking through a cluttered reticle too. Maybe it is just about getting older but all those dots and dashes is had to stay focused on. Maybe it is just crappy ocular focus :)

Give me a shout about the TT....

I have no doubt Sightron could produce a good scope for PRS, but they would need to do what others have done and LISTEN to the shooters that dominate these matches. Bushnell enlisted the help of George Gardner (G2) now they are successful. Top shooters win matches with their scopes. Vortex has team shooters that have been around since the 308/SFP days of the sport giving them input. Kahles got input from Shannon Kay (K&M) when designing the SKMR reticles and upgrading their scope and now they have become even more popular.

Horus is a bug screen and it doesn't let you do hold-unders (which are just as important as hold-overs). Christmas tree reticles are handy, but they need to be subtle. The Mil-R isn't a bug screen or even a christmas tree, but The "T" with the fine scale is distracting. The numerous different sized hashes and gaps make it confusing when you're trying to use it quickly. Things are not consistent, they are different in different parts of the reticle.

thanks for clearly not reading my post, also ....if I was gonna razor money.....my money would be on a US OPTICS OR S&B not vortex..
thanks though.

You clearly missed the part where I told you keep on saving........ If you want to buy the best......lol

But you are right for that money buy something else (40% of the the top PRS shooters are wrong - of course) ....RFlMAO!
