Henry Single Shot Deer Rifle

I’m interested in picking up a 450 bushmaster as a brush gun.
I want something light, short to maneuver around the bush and of course the 450 as a thump thump round.

On my list of considerations are:

-Ruger American Ranch (cheaper option)
-Savage 110 Scout
-Ruger Scout (expensive option and unlikely)
-Henry single shot

I would be mounting a 1.75-5x scope on whichever one I get.

Curious for those that have the single shot how do you like it?
Trigger break, overall feel, do you feel limited with only 1 round?

The Henry appeals to me due to apparent build and trigger quality for the same price as a Ruger American.

Was leaning towards 450 bushmaster over 45-70 since I was considering bolt actions.
Also seems a little easier to come by 450 ammo over 45-70.

Let me know your thoughts.

I think the Howa mini action comes in 450 bush as well. If you’re going single shot I wouldn’t write off the 45/70. I’m surprised you find 450 more readily available. My experience has been the opposite.

i get price would be a issue, or can be, im the same, but yeah Henry..... in that case f they r cheap

My LGS has 45-70, 450BM is rare in my parts.
 
Build quality is good. The rifle I had was pretty plain in terms of wood, I now have a shotgun that has pretty nice wood imo.

Re: triggers

I had a pre recall rifle; the trigger was terrible. Like, hang a milk jug off it and it doesn’t go off terrible, Baikal terrible, flintlock adjacent, you get the idea.

The trigger on my newer post recall 12 gauge probably has a 4lb pull weight. Maybe even less, it is too light for a shotgun. If the new rifles are like this I can’t imagine you not being satisfied

Currently hard to find and expensive, but look at what people are asking for handis. These aren’t ruger no 1s but they have more in common with them in terms of quality than an H&R

Some things I really like:

Excellent recoil pads, I put 20ish rounds of 3.5 inch duck loads and a handful of goose loads through my 7lb 12 gauge last weekend and didn’t have a bruise, just incipient rotator cuff surgery :dancingbanana:

I think that the top lever is pretty cool, namely how it opens the action when you move it in either direction. It’s also small enough that it only tagged me in the thumb a couple times on my duck hunt, never had an issue with the rifle. This is often a problem for me with top break levers

LOP seems like it may be a little long?

All in all I’m a fan. If they released rifles in more interesting chamberings seasonally like the ruger no 1 I could see myself getting a few.

The one change I would really like to
See is a tooless takedown but I’m not sure if the action has a fixed hinge pin?
 
If you are interested in a single shot option with a great trigger and is available in both .45-70 and .450 bushsmasher, check out the CVA Scout. Inexpensive, nicely made, compact despite the barrel length, decent recoil pad, includes the scope base, and the triggers are actually great. Just something to consider.
 
Chunky monkey compared to the Henry though right? Definitely something to keep an eye on though. I like the sound of takedown, 26 inch barrel and stainless steel for the same price as the Henry though

The Henry isn’t light by some peoples standards but it is a well balanced gun. Also has that “ classic” vibe.

Edit: weights on the CVA are all over the place it seems. Prophet River has both CVA and Henry 450 bm single shots. Henry looks like it has a nice piece of lumber on it if that means anything to you
 
I would prefer the wood stock to a synthetic on the single shot, gives it a bit more class.
In terms of 45-70 vs 450 I think both will do what I want and wouldn’t be apposed to either.
 
Trigger pull is important to me.
I’m currently using a 20ga 870 as my brush buster but I really dislike the trigger on it.
 
I'd go for a Traditions G3 Outfitter in 450 BM myself over the Henry single. The G3 unit w/22" barrel weighs 6.25 lbs. (Bare rifle.) The barrels on the G3 rifles
are hammer forged, Lothar Walther items which I'll take over any button rifled tube as I only shoot hardcast bullets for both critters & plinkin'. Wanted to
get one in 450 BM along with one in 300 BLK, but dealers up here are near the bottom of the food chain when it comes to US sourced guns & ammo.

I ended up getting a Ruger American Ranch in 450 BM & it's a tight shooter with it's hammer forged 16.25" barrel and the bare rifle weight is only 5.5 lbs.
Not as sneeky-quiet to operate the action in single shot mode like a break action single, but the ergo's be right for me.

I already have a couple 'big bores'. I was looking for a foul weather rifle for those days when I don't want to take a Marlin 1895 in 45-70Gov or 444Marlin out in the crappy weather.
I'd considered a CVA Scout in 45-70Gov, but the flatter shooting 444, similar to a 450, fits my needs better. Plus, I already have a decent stock of reloading components.

I found, a CVA Scout in 444Marlin at Prophet River a month or so ago. I'm not a fan of brakes, I asked PR to remove muzzle brake before shipping, it's still in the box. I've had no time to get to range.

Don't let the barrel length of a CVA Scout miss lead you into thinking they are excessively long. At 25" - 3" brake (did I say I hate breaks) = 22" includes chamber and there's no receiver. I'd hazard to guess the CVA is shorter than my 22" Marlin 1895 444Marlin.
If I get to hate the plastic hardware, Boyds has wood.

Since I'm single loading, the CVA should be able to handle the 'long in the tooth' 44cal heavy revolver bullets, ie Swift A-Frames & 300gn Sierras, that my Marlin 1895 444Marlin doesn't like to cycle.
444Marlin Max. OAL ~2.570", data for 44cal Swift bullets in a 444Marlin lists an OAL of 2.620".

Oh yes, mine is no lightweight! But it's also not super heavy and I'm a fan of the stock dimensions, it's fairly slim and trim which helps with the overall ergonomics.

I started shooting mine without a brake for the same reason, .35 Whelen shooting 200gr fusions at 2700 didn't kick too much.

There is new Speer data for the .35 Whelen which is just absurd. I duplicated the performance and once I got 250's moving at 2630fps... the brake went back on!

Such a cool rifle.
 
If you don't mind a single shot, why not something like Pedersoli: Trapdoor Carbine (45-70) with 22 inch barrel from marstar? I would of suggested a Rolling block, but I doubt you want to be lugging a 28" barrel around the woods. I can't talk triggers on these as I've never shot them.
