High power scopes?

Wow, this is some thread! I'm almost glad I never noticed it before...it's more fun to find it after it's been fully cooked and seasoned to it's current spicy perfection. :)

I'll throw my oar into the water. Like most folks in my age bracket, my first scopes were 4x and 3-9x, because that's what a scope was at that time. I eventually moved towards and fell in love with low-power variables (Ontario hunter...) and for many years I thought the Leupold 1-4 and 1.5-5 models were hunting perfection. Nowadays I have sort of left those behind; just too dim and dark for earliest/latest shooting times. Yes, yes, I know...a 1-4x20 has the same exit pupil as a 3.5-10x50 when both are set at maximum power. Good luck trying to fool yourself into believing that they are equally functional at last light.

So now I've swung back to 3-9, 4-12 and similar scopes. That way, when I am using the scope to glass across clearings, I can usually read the scope setting on the gun the guy across the field is pointing at me, and I can eyeball him and judge which of us is likely to win the coming firefight. I have enough magnification to shoot deer all the way to a kilometer and beyond, and if I get an adjustable objective and a ballistics app for my phone I have lots of toys to play with while sitting in my heated deer blind in case the WiFi drops out.

I love hunting! :)

Lol

This thread is getting out of control...

Perhaps I'm an old soul and tend to lean toward the "classic" ways of doing things. Keeping it simple and as effective as possible. I'm not a seasond expert hunter, but I understand the dynamics efficient hunting. That's all I'm about. The closer the shot the greater chance of a clean kill.

Where I'm going with this thread is the common "I want to shoot a deer at 1000 yards" or "how far can I see with that scope?"... basically new shooters/hunters that watch all the hunting TV shows and read all the hunting magazines and want to emulate them without understanding why they use such equipment.

The guys in the media are experienced and can properly make use of the equipment. So I understand that much. But, these new guys need to start at the basics, etc, etc. The guys at my LGS see too many guys walk in and get the most powerful gun with the most powerful gun as possible. Someone even bought Savage Axis II and mounted at Leupold VX-6 6-24x on it... wtf?

As for staying with low power scopes for everything... that's a personal preference. I like to keep my guns as functional as possible for dynamic hunting. I can use it in the bush, in the blind, and off the truck. I even have sighted-in back irons at the ready... just because.

Which powerful gun/gun did the guy get? Probably doesn't matter because Leupold doesn't make a vx6 6-24x so either the "guy" at the LGS is full of BS or you are. I'm betting on the latter.

They do/did have a 4-24 x 42 in the lineup, maybe a typo on BM's part. Maybe the person he described bought an Axis II in 22-250, 243, 25-06 and bought the best scope possible, as many preach on here, to put on it. What's wrong with that I truly don't understand.

Leupold is far from the "best scope possible" but we are getting way off topic

Oops. Typo. It was a 4-24.

Anyhow Leupold isn't the "best"... if I could afford to have multiple S&B and Kahles scopes that's all I'd have. Leupold is still a good quality product and it's nice to have Korth at my disposal. Many other brands have to be sent to the U.S. or Europe for repairs.

It was a 22-250 Axis II with a VX-6... nothing really "wrong" about it. If your buying a budget rifle why buy a premium optic? Isn't the whole point of a budget rifle to maintain a budget?

Desired rifles in my area are a .300 WM (or WSM) and 7mm RM (referred to as Seven Em-Em) Browning X-bolt with a "clip".

Everyone in retail believes they are an authority on the products they sell, just like those that post on this forum believe they are an authority based on their experiences. There are those that choose to follow either or blindly down those roads.

I can tell you this, peoples expectations are vastly different and I have gotten caught more times than I would like to admit ordering what I consider to be garbage once it is in my hands based on the great reviews and recommendations on this site. Regardless of what people post on here and how revered their knowledge and opinions are, you really need to do your own research to figure things out the way you want them to be.

I guess the moral of the story is what magnifications you desire is dependant on what type of "hunting" you do.

All around I prefer a good 2.5-8x or under. I don't consider a marksmanship challenge of a long range shot nessisary. I don't need to stoke my ego, I'm all business and I play it by the numbers. The closer the better for me. It increases you chance of a clean kill and you don't have to walk as far to retireve it (which is a plus when you've been walking all day) and... I don't care too much for magnums.

If you plan on sitting in a blind all day and play sniper... I guess that is enough logic to go with something with more power.

I guess the moral of the story is that there's more than one way to hunt and more than one way to scope a rifle. I think you're well out of line here and you'd be better off to myob.

I'm in line with those who agree, and anger those who don't. No biggie.

Opinions are like a-holes... it's not like I'm cramming my ideology down someone's throat. It's a great discuion/argument... perhaps I've been on CGN too long. :)
