HK SL8/243/G36 FAQ, Mods, And Info

Does the Tommy built adapter still allow for the SL8 bolt hold open and release to still work?

According to the TommyBuilt website you pull the factory unit and install it on the new lower with the new ar trigger. I’m curious how much of an improvement a Geissele SSA E would make over the stock trigger since these guns are startlingly accurate and consistant.

Albon was kind enough to reply via PM , his AR mags work the bolt hold open about 95% of the time. That's good, as my NEA mag conversion unit (years ago) rarely actuated the hold open on the last round.
You must also take off the paddle mag release for the Tommybuilt unit to work.

Since they rebooted production in 2021 they quit chrome lining the barrels. Anyone know if they are even more accurate now?

Here are groups from my last 2 range trips using the new TommyBuilt stock with a Geissele Hi-Speed National Match trigger (tried SSP trigger, the trigger had some problems and felt like a 2 stage, returned and got the HSNM which has been absolutely amazing so far)
It is 2022 production so it is the new non chrome-lined version
Shoots amazingly well with 69gr FGMM specifically, consistently submoa, but seems to be able to shoot everything quite well as well
All shot at 103 yards (range claims it's 100 meters (109 yards) but the laser rangefinder says it's actually only 103 yards)

Very impressive for a semi.

Anyone who has done the Hera conversion - how did you remove the roll pin from the original stock to get the buffer out?

That roll pin is a pain in the a$$. I have a pin punch that got it started but it was slightly too small. What I ended up doing was using one of the other pins from the rifle which was the same size and knocking it through with that.

That last part is one thing that they don't mention in the instructions.

So if I read right h@k ...new sl-8’s are not. Chrome lined barrels?
Can someone verify this please

A good question. I looked up a recent (2022 nra rifleman review) and IIRC, they said that their sample was chrome lined.
Yet some knowlegeable people here said no more chrome lining, which if correct, would be a pity.

Mine is 2022 production and it's definitely not chrome lined. I've looked at the muzzle and inside the bore with a borescope and can say for sure it's not.

There's this thread on HKPro and somebody said they contacted HK and confirmed with them that the new production (since 2021) are not chrome lined.

So much for HK "No Compromise" and in my opinion I would be willing to sacrifice a bit of accuracy for chrome lining but they've decided against it. It is what it is I guess

They are just wrong as far as I know. Even the photo in that review is of the new non-chrome-lined version. The new production also has a slightly different style crown cut

This is what the muzzle of the new non chrome-lined looks like:

If you can somehow find the chrome lined barrels and get the tools to replace the barrel, it is still going to be very hard because since 2010 apparently HK started putting loctite in the barrel nut threads which requires heating to be able to loosen up. I've asked Tom Bostic from TommyBuilt and he told me the new production SL8s do still have the loctite in it. Although I don't know if it's the same since the SL8 down stateside might be assembled by their factory in Columbus (I think ours come directly from Germany although I could be wrong)

Yeah - those instructions have left a-lot to be desired. Did you guys have issues with the spring for the locking lever?

If you are talking about the bit that goes around the safety then yes, that spring needed trimming too. I cut off half a coil at a time until it fit.

I took it to the range for the first time since doing the conversion last weekend. I liked it, although to be honest, I didn't find it that much better than the original configuration.
