How many of you hunt with single shots?

Actually the #1V has been bedded to the hanger and has also had a forend pressure screw put through the hanger to allow for a bit of fine tuning as well. It seems to be useful and inexpensive modification.

single shot

I just got my Hicks Accurizer in the mail and cant wait to get it installed so I can play with it. My gunsmith is intrigued too. Cant really bed a single shot or most of them maybe so this is designed to do it differently. This device is designed specifically for single shot stocks and applies adjustable pressure to the barrel at a critical spot. Let you know how it works out.

I drilled and tapped the hanger on my #1 .500 when it was going together. It took only a few minutes, then put in an allen head screw to adjust pressure. Very quick and easy job on a #1.

In the last 7 years, even my bolt action 300 magnum has been a single shot on every game animal harvested from deer through moose. My attitude is that the first shot is ALWAYS the best shot I am going to get, so I make the most of it. Have not needed a follow up shot. Nothing I have shot has gone more than 40 yards, and there was never any doubt whether I hit it or not. I am not into shooting long range for hunting. My personal limit is about 250 yards on a deer, and maybe 300 yards on a moose. I prefer closer, but it doesn't always happen that way. I ALWAYS use the best shooting position I can find, and will make use of any rest that is available.

My first single shot was a NEF handi in 243. It was for my wife. She killed a cow moose with it at 40 yards. It was plenty accurate, even off the bench.

My next one was a H&R Buffalo Classic in 45-70. That one absolutely amazes me -- clover leafs at 100 yards with irons.

And then I made the jump to a #1H. Quality with a capital Q. I love it! That thing is a tack driver, if you can get the concept of driving tacks with a sledge hammer -- it is in 405 Winchester. Tons of fun. Haven't killed anything with them yet, but I hope to next year.

Have a couple friends that ran an experiment with a #1 in 300 Mag and a Tikka bolt. They stood side by side and shot off hand at a 100 yard target, and the guy with the Tikka told me that he could get his first 4 shots off in the length of time that the #1 guy got 3 off, and that after that, the guy with the #1 caught and stayed one shot ahead of him. Both of these guys are shooters and hunters. The Tikka owner went out and bought a #1 after that.

Next year I am going to use the #1 on moose and the Buffalo Classic on deer. Time to quit carrying the 11+ pound Browning 300 mag around the bush. I'm getting too old for that. :D

I have another single shot to add to that list now. Thanks to WR1894, I now have an original Sharps Borchardt .45/70 to add to that list. I am anxious to get it out and see what it will do. 32" barrel and a great bore, it already feels like a keeper!

My bolt action mag actually holds 4 cartridges, but I've never needed more than 1. Thinking of going Ruger #1 in 45-70.

These posts go along just fine and then someone mentions a gun with which there is no equal.....Like the Borchardt.....And I start getting weak....unable to control myself with fits of envy, mixed with jealousy, thoughts enter my head about hunting in a different time, a time when every kid wanted a gun for Christmas, even a BB gun, there was no gratuitive violence on T.V., or no TV at all, Hollywood had real heroes, you could even trust politicians....OK Ok I'm back.....pls. don't mention Borchardt again!!!

You bastard!!! Where'd you luck into a Borchardt?

How did you know my parents weren't married?!?! You cops have access to everything don't you?
I just figured I had better get a real buffalo gun for when you come down to chase bison! Did you progress on your .50 bisonbanger anymore or will you use the Rigby or roller?

I've always loved the look of the No. 1's and should one come along in the right configuration with a unique wood stock on EE, it could very well be in my safe the following week. I've never fired one though. I was never really interested in the highwalls, couldn't see the love. Then I shot one in 45/70. I want.

#1 458 Tropical iron sites #1 45-70 scoped #1 30-06 international scoped #3 45-70 iron sites, never needed more than one shot.

With the exception of this year I like to spend a day walking through the hills with my 45-120 Shiloh on the off-chance I'll catch a buck unawares.
However that may never happen because I'm too busy huffing and puffing from packing that 13 lb. cannon...:)

I'm sure your Ruger No.1 is a "nicer" gun but I have a NEF Handi-Rifle in .223Remington and it persuaded me that a single shot is enough. With an elastic sleeve shellholder on the butt I think I can reload quickly enough. I really like the light weight and simplicity.

I normally use a Lee Enfield No.4 for deer hunting and I think when (not if) its weight and my age combine too much against me, I'll look for another Handi-Rifle, in .308 Winchester, for deer.

That made me think that of all the possible abuses of the gun registry, if there is a gunnut cop out there using it to find people who own interesting guns and writing them to say, "If you ever want to sell your .x., please let me know," I could just about forgive him.

I have a 45-70 on a Martini_Enfiled action. Topped with a short shotgun scope. Carried it on a moose hunt, but it is still a virgin.

Only once have I ever needed a second shot on a deer/moose, so would not hestitate to carry a single shot.

My only problem with the rifle was the lack of a safety. I carried it muzzle down with the lever open.
