In the last 7 years, even my bolt action 300 magnum has been a single shot on every game animal harvested from deer through moose. My attitude is that the first shot is ALWAYS the best shot I am going to get, so I make the most of it. Have not needed a follow up shot. Nothing I have shot has gone more than 40 yards, and there was never any doubt whether I hit it or not. I am not into shooting long range for hunting. My personal limit is about 250 yards on a deer, and maybe 300 yards on a moose. I prefer closer, but it doesn't always happen that way. I ALWAYS use the best shooting position I can find, and will make use of any rest that is available.
My first single shot was a NEF handi in 243. It was for my wife. She killed a cow moose with it at 40 yards. It was plenty accurate, even off the bench.
My next one was a H&R Buffalo Classic in 45-70. That one absolutely amazes me -- clover leafs at 100 yards with irons.
And then I made the jump to a #1H. Quality with a capital Q. I love it! That thing is a tack driver, if you can get the concept of driving tacks with a sledge hammer -- it is in 405 Winchester. Tons of fun. Haven't killed anything with them yet, but I hope to next year.
Have a couple friends that ran an experiment with a #1 in 300 Mag and a Tikka bolt. They stood side by side and shot off hand at a 100 yard target, and the guy with the Tikka told me that he could get his first 4 shots off in the length of time that the #1 guy got 3 off, and that after that, the guy with the #1 caught and stayed one shot ahead of him. Both of these guys are shooters and hunters. The Tikka owner went out and bought a #1 after that.
Next year I am going to use the #1 on moose and the Buffalo Classic on deer. Time to quit carrying the 11+ pound Browning 300 mag around the bush. I'm getting too old for that.
