I bet you never ate a bear foot.

How many buddys working in your operation you said? You know the guys who don't want to pluck the bear foot any longer...

to me meat is meat and i do it eat lot of cuisine that is not on regular peoples diets, i'm sure bear paw is delicious. in the 20s during the great depression i bet there was a lot of food eaten that wasn't the norm. i remember they used sawdust as fillers in sausage and bread. ive seen stewed bear paws and smelled great. its just meat and cartilage with bone.in the south they eat fried pork rind and pigs feet so what;s the big deal. actually ive had the pigs feet in gelatin that a friend bought by the tub ,just heat and serve.im sure almost every hunter has had deer hair or moose hair in there steak ,down feathers in there duck or goose.wrigglys gum used to be made out of synthetic rubber. people use intestines as sausage casings. haggis ive enjoyed on robbie burns day these are caucasian dishes . And yes if #### hit the fan ill be a cannibal , meat is meat

the book is this, sorry the image is too large to embed in the post, but you can click the link to get the picture. the book's name is "49 North Cook's Wild". I have made rabbit dish with one recipe from it. all family love it!

the Roast Bear Paw page is here. not my style though. I am still learning to mix Asian and Western style together. but I know I will get it done.

This book was a gift from a Caucasian friend. He has quit hunting long ago.

Interesting recipe, thanks for posting. i wont be trying it...hahaha im pretty sure the wife would faint if i set a bear paw on her plate. personally i don't care what part of the bear is consumed as long as its done legally and harvested for personal use. Good luck with you hunt and with your cuisine

That recipe is similar to “pig tails” which are also served with sauerkraut. I noticed it calls for skinned paws, which appears to differ from the Asian way. The only thing I could find on the Asian method suggested they were “braised” for several days.

Seeing this now, it seems less repulsive. I was under the impression the OP was removing and eating only the pads from the feet. That seems to me about as gross as possible and not worth the effort.

seen recipes for Bear feet in a couple of game cook books. but they either call for burning the fur off and/ or skinning the feet. Have you ever tried waxing them. i know some duck hunters dip their ducks in melted wax and then peal it off to remove pin feathers.

Look at the meals... Estimated $460.000,- on the Chinese market.

Apparently, these were mostly coming from Russia, the bears with everything else on the carcass just dumped but the inerts have been removed also...

I have never thought of leaving the skin on. I skin them out, remove claws and my wife makes the most awesome braised bear paw stew you can imagine.

I want to enjoy what I harvest. By pulling off the hair, we can fully consume the bear paws. It took my friends several hours to pull the hairs last year, and they told me that they would not help me with that chore again. For a few racists in this thread, you are exposed. There is nothing wrong to consume as much as you can from what you harvest.

back to my question, I simply do not want to throw the think skin away from the paws. However, if I cannot find a way to pull the hair off, I have no choice.

Very interesting, I had no clue people ate these parts. Is there anything similar you could compare to it's taste and texture?

Racism and perceived racism.

moderating in the Hunting section ....

Guys for the most part are just trying to be funny. People with ethnic backgrounds quickly see it as racism. Mostly it's not intended that way at all. But, it can quickly escalate to the real thing.

Given the rhetoric around Covid 19 and it's possible origins, people of oriental descent are under attack right now.

Even those Canadian born for generations are feeling the heat.

Lets give our oriental friends a break and back off eh?

It's embarrassing to see comments like this from members. JYC is simply asking for some measure of decorum.

Pretty sad that CGN's General Rules and Guidelines has to spell it out for certain individuals, so here's a reminder:

I cannot believe how stupid most of the comment have been. Right on my desk, I have a cook book written by a Caucasian hunter. One recipe is for bear paw. Yes, bear paw. I usually harvest 2 bears a year. If some of you not stupid enough, you can count your fat fingers to 8. We will have 8 bear paws. It is beneficial to find way to fully utilize them. I know how to scape the pig with boiled water. I witnessed such scaling many time in our village where I grew up. but bear hairs are so deep rooted, unlike the pig hairs.
Anyone in my circle knows that I am the person who stands against randomly accusing others of racists. However, some of the folks here did not hide their racist true color well.
BTW, what forum are we in? If you ask for a question of utilizing animal part, they will tell all the stories of poaching and selling.

Not buying it.

Dude, where's your sense of humor?

Dip them in boiling water? I have heard of people doing this with pigs to scrape the hair off.
^^This might work for bear, I do this with entire pigs. But if you are looking to preserve the bears paw what you need to do is case skin it, remove all the muscle tissue from the bones. I'm not familiar with the blanching process for the bone but you'll need to do something like that, tan the hide you skinned off then put the two back together. Removing the fur alone will just leave (soon to rot) leather on top of bone, tendon and soon to rot flesh. As other posters have queried: you still haven't made precisely clear what you desire for end result making any answers useful at best and most redundant.

EDIT: later post I found you intend on eating it. Since the hair doesn't come out when the pig removal method is tried just boil the whole thing like you would the pigs head... everything will soften up, scrape out the edible meat.
