**Huge CGN .264 Bullet Test Result** (lots of pics!)

Gorgeous work displaying the results.
I shoot alot of BERGERS and would'a been curious how they compared.
I'd happily supply you the bullets but I dont shoot 6.5

The Berger 140gr VLD Hunting bullet was tested (see post #184). Depending on what you want a bullet to do you may like the result, personally, I wasn't too impressed.

Friends have had similar experiences with the Bergers.
Great long range ballistics but far from being a big game hunting bullet if what you want is controlled expansion and penetration.

Thanks guys. You guys just reminded me to incorporate Part Deux in the original thread, I totally forgot about that. I recently bougth a Bullet Test Tube to try out. Should be less mess than the wet newspaper.

Steve, are you still planning to do another one of these super tests with a different caliber (and your bullet tube)?

I'd have to strongly agree. The above results are unquestionable proof that Berger's absolutely suck for big game hunting. Marketing their paper punchers as big game bullets, anything for money, and thousands are gobbling it up.

Any idea of distance or impact velocity?

Probably muzzle velocity minus 20fps if that. Considering this was a 6.5 Sweede, that is terrible bullet performance. Imagine if that was a 264 Win mag! Varmint bullet! Your tests do corelate with what I have seen in same brands in the 30 cal spectrum in terms of a "general comparison" between brands.
Excellent work. If you ever plan anything in the 30 cal spectrum, please let me know. I will definately contribute some goodies for the cause.

Recovered Bullet

First of all I love this thread. I used it to decide what bullets to hunt with this year. The hornady SST had good Price / Performance ratio so I went with that.

Shot a deer with my SST handload on Friday and recovered the bullet - figured I would post the bullet performance here. It dropped the deer in place.

HornadySST.jpg

Stats:
Caliber: 6.5x55
Bullet: 140gr Hornady SST
Rifle: M96 sporter
Recovered weight: 101.3 gr
Max expansion: 0.574"

Deer: Whitetail ~ 150 lbs
Bullet entered in the top left butt (Don't ask) penetrated full length of deer (including left liver & lung) found at the bottom of the trachea. The deer didn't even take a step, just dropped. There was a fair amount of meat damage to top of left leg. I think it performed pretty well. If I shot the deer broadside it definitely would have exited.

I shot a bull elk this year with a 30 cal 180 gr accubond. The shot was about 300 yards from a 300WSM. The bullet entered behind the left shoulderblade, and was found just inside the hide in front of the opposite shoulder.

The recovered bullet looks just like the accubonds in BCSteve's pics. The bullet weighed 118 grains, after washing the crud off. Retained weight was at 65%, so right around the recovered weight that BCSteve showed.

I just thought I'd mention this, so as to show how BCSteve's data is very applicable and directly analagous to hunting applications.

i can help with these ones although that's barely a dent...

So at half the price of Barnes and at ten times the availability - looks like the tried and true Nosler Partition is still one of the top performers.

Please tell me where you can get Partitions for 1/2 the price of Barnes!

This thread makes me question the threads showing lead in the ground meat. If you use quality cup and core bullets and come back with a bullet weighing 75% of what it started there is not very many grains of lead to be splattered into the meat...
