Hunting Cormorants. Great wingshooting opportunity. Target rich enviroment. SAFSAC

I thought they had never been shootable.

I not sure about other provinces but as far as I know we only have been able to legally shoot them since September 15,2021. Apparently other provinces have been able to hunt them for years as stated by some other members! It’s a lot of fun.

I don't think you can. Latest nb regs say "same as waterfowl season" I think.

Just had a look at the regs, in the small game license section it says same as waterfowl season but in the varmint license section it says open March 1-Sept 17 2022 & March 1- Sept 23 in 2023 & no limit on them. I think you can still hunt them with a varmint permit.

varmint permit

WTF is a varmint permit? Why would you need a permit to shoot vermin?

Here in Alberta, with landowner permission, we can shoot up to and including black bear with no licence at all ... for the protection of livestock.

That's just how it be in NB. Can even be fined target shooting (other than a range) if you ain't got a valid hunting permit, or a sight in permit. Yeah it's messed up.

Holy phuk that could be dangerous .

I thought the same thing...

When I was about 8 or 9 I watched my dad shoot a huge flying swan with his 7x64 Brno, (about 125 yards) ... but the bird was below the top of a hillside so the backstop was good...

worst is raw (sea lion) ... do not ask me how i know it lol ...

Sounds about as yummy as seal flipper. Which I thought I escaped from this Nfld relatives "gifting" after I joined the army & posted west.
Alas! There were Nfld privates that pushed this upon me when they discovered in was born in NS.

It's some kind of regional torture.....
Sometimes I have nightmares about glass jars and seeing the boney skeleton of a seals flipper. Lol

Edit: gimme shark fin soup any day.....

Are you using a blind? Or just sitting amongst the decoys?

We run two boats. Both camo of course and one has a blind built on it that folds up. It holds three hunters. The rest wear full camo and sit below the top so we don’t get skylined. Some of the islands have stone blinds which we use. Running the boat to pick up the carnage keeps one very busy.

Awesome decoy spread! I've never seen/heard of anyone using decoys for cormorants.. I shot the odd one when I lived back in NB, but usually out of boredom or opportunity. I generally don't participate in 'varmint control' but I understand the situation that's occurred in Ontario. Not an invasive species technically, but certainly one that's population has really exploded to the detriment of many.

They do cause more damage than they are good to look at - there are thousands around the Skyway Bridge in Burlington/Hamilton. I would participate in a population reduction activity
