Hunting for Carp

I have shot hundreds of carp using my bow and solid fiberglass fishing arrows first thing to do is cut those rubber feathers off your arrows they make absolutely no difference in arrow flight.

I gave 95% of the carp I shot away to orientals that were always trying to fish for them with rod/reel set ups.

I was great fun walking thru the spring flooded pastures in knee deep water with these massive fish swimiing around with their dorsal fins cutting the surface...

I cant even touch a carp "omfg they reek" let alone even think about eating one. I am sure if I was starving to death and that was the only food I could have, then sure.. but to think about eating a bottom feeding stink fish is just... I just puked in my mouth a bit.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

lobster and catfish (huge markets for both) are scavengers who eat rotting fish while carp stick to insects, crustaceans, and plants. theoretically, a carp is the one with the better diet yet people who have no clue what they are talking about think the carp eats garbage and stinks.

pike and bass often stink as well, but they taste great.

dont knock it til you try it;)

I didn't know anyone really ate carp, i thought they were pretty much big goldfish!!!!!
Not too appetizing to me, but I guess I'd try it once anyways. The bowfishing part seems like a ton of fun!
This kind of makes me want to go out for a steelhead today.
Much better!!!!!

Spew.

"...recipes for cooking them..." A Yahoo search comes up with 2,140,000 sites with carp recipes. This is one of 'em. http://www.bassonhook.com/fishforfood/carprecipes.html
"...going to use a crossbow..." Got one of the retrieving reels on your bow? Don't know if they come for crossbows. And the right kind of arrow head?

That's a filthy concept. Not sure how I feel about "Carp Gravy."

Remember that scene from Simpsons "Moe's Family Feedbag Diner" episode, where the evening special is "Steak-Fish?" (aka bottom-feeding suction eel?) Good times!

we hunt them while under the water by freediving....

they are an invasive species in north America, so please put a hole in every one you see. Ducks Unlimited can help you find spots with carp, they hate the critters as they are a major destructive force in a wetland. unfortunately for the Ontario lads, your #######s at OFAH have been marketing them as a gamefish for catch and release.

Oh come on. I used to catch them when I was a little kid. The smell they leave on your hands is unreal, washing your hands 10 times still doesn't get rid of it lol.
Bass... mmmmm I love bass, no comparison in the smell factor lol.

ugh, bass. they only become a gamefish when some 500lb redneck in a nascar hat decides to make a tv show about them. god I hate bass.

Catfish on the other hand are FAR better eating, put up a stronger fight, and take no talent to catch (just like bass, but they don't pretend to be something they're not)

I'd eat catfish over bass any day.

You don't think that about eating Lobster, I bet..

Skin 'em

It's incredible how people turn their noses up at food they haven't even experienced. Trout, salmon, pickerel, whitefish and bass have a great commercial value to them because they are real easy to clean on a huge commercial value. Less time people take to clean fish at the plants means more money for the man - hence the term "Garbage Fish" is given to harder to clean fish like pike and carp. I have eaten carp. It was cut into 1' x 1' chunks, tempura and panko battered then deep fried and served with a lemon ginger soya dipping sauce. It was pretty spectacular. I don't remember the tiny bones, but I do remember helping skin the things. Good Luck, and let us know how it works out.

Do you realize how many people think Rotten Ronnie`s is "fine dining"?
Like ANY fish species ,the taste ,texture of the flesh and smell are in most cases directly related to it`s habitat and water conditions.

Hey ,this fish smells like......fish.WTF did you expect it to smell like.....CHICKEN ?

Thats right! I am not fishing for them I am bow hunting them. My buddy and I are going to try our luck at arrowing a carp or two in the spring. What I would like to know is some recipes for cooking them and some processing advice or tips. I am going to use a crossbow so any advice on that would be appreciated...TFN...

Back in Europe I ate lots of them. The fresh carp flesh is sweet. I like the bigger ones because for it's easier to pick the bones out. Salt and roll the pieces through flour and fry them real good. Use good sauce. I prepare the sauce myself: crushed garlic, salt, water, butter-milk, grated cucumber, olive oil... mmmm finger licking good...
Make sure you can spear fish where you intend to do it. For example, in BC the regs say: "No spear fishing of any kind in Region 1."

Actually in Sask. our regulations are fairly easy for bow and spear fishing. One stipulation is that there is no catch and release on arrowed or speared fish. Wow, I'd a never thought of that...LOL...

The orientals that I gave the carp to would throw them all into there trunk and start slicing them up on the spot.

Would cut them into strips 1/2" X 1/2" and as long as they could then they would tilt their heads back and slurp them down ...

Some of the happiest guys I have ever seen.

Me I like my fish cooked... :)

Come to think of it, I'm not a real big fan of Pike or Muskies either! Pickeral, Perch, Trout, Salmon and even Catfish are more my favorites. Use to love Smelts when I was a kid & my older brother would show up at the house with a bucket full. Carp...Sorry not my bag & I admit have I never eaten it & would have to be hungry as hell before I would. Fill your boots boys! Regardless, hunting em with bow sounds like fun! Even though the boiled rock sounds more appetizing!:p

The only time I really enjoy Pike is through the ice ,nice cold water = white ,firm tasty meat.Ever eat Burbot (most know it as Mariah sp.) looks like a cross between an eel and a catfish. Most people see them and think WTF is that......quick throw it back.Being a fresh water Cod ,these things are great eating out of cold water.Just skin them like a catfish.....ambrosia !!
I guess it`s like anything else (including ugly women)if it looks and smells that bad ,it can`t be good.
