Hunting Tips And Tricks

Always take a cleaning rod with you in case you have to push a stuck case or some dirt Etc out of the barrel!! I keep one in the truck all the time.

when in un familer areas while camping put your socks in your boots and leave your boots upside down. creepy crawlys that bite are not fun.
dont shoot at wasp nests. ensure that the fallen logs your are cutting up dont hide a hornets nest.

I like the cleaning rod idea. I keep a break down rod in my fanny pack.
Another thing that's in my pack is a pocket stove with solid fuel tablets (I use the type the military uses) a steel cup with a lid and a couple of packets of cup-a-soup and film canisters of couscous. Boil the water first, then add the soup and couscous, put the lid back on and wait 5 minutes. Use a plastic spoon as it's too thick to drink.

Scout after the season in areas you wanted to hunt this season past. Will give you a real good idea of what to expect in the fall.
Also glassing fields in the evening, late july early august may spot you a buck to hunt.

Never climb a tree without 3 points of contact at all times. In extreme cold be aware limbs may break easy under your weight. Always wear a safety harness or belt.

Have a close look at the lay of the land , wind does some weird things, can be in your face, and 100 yds in front of you its blowing towards the animal.
Air flow when its calm is also important, as the old saying goes, hunt high in the morning, low in the evening (air flow up and down hills)

Always check the chamber of your rifle in front of your partner, even if you know its empty. (at the truck) Will add to this as brain cell warms up.:D ;)

When looking at topos or areals, look for brooks that finger out, swamps close to hardwood ridges , heavy softwood butted up against hardwood .

Animal down, #### locker, piss bag, and tarsal glands;
Be careful not to get any of it on the meat .

Here's few more tips,

-When going into a new unfamiliar hunting area do not drive in and set up camp in the dark.

-Choose a caliber for when everything goes wrong, not for when everything goes right.

-When choosing clothing for the outdoors remember that- "Cotton kills".

-When dragging out an elk or moose, tie your rope around the antlers and run the rope down the nose, and make two half-hitches around it.

- One of the most dangerous things out hunting is the ATV. Know your limits and take no risk's. It's better to walk, than to regret.

For small items (touques, soft golves, scarfs, socks, etc) place them in large ziplock freezer bags in your packs. This will keep them scent free and waterproof for the duration of your hunt.
To release air, roll your articles into a small roll, insert into the bag, kneen or step onto said item and zip the bag close.
You will end uo with a "vacuum sealed” package that is both waterproof and scent free for the duration of the season as long as you don’t screw with the seal

I don't know if it's obvious to everyone else but if you are looking for dry wood to build a fire, break off the dead branches from the living trees. The stuff on the ground may look dry but is likely wet in side. Those fuel tablets I mentioned for the pocket stove are great for getting a fire going.

If you are lost in the bush, don't wander around in circles. Move from tree to tree, in a straight line, always watching the tree you left and the tree you are headed for. This will prevent you from walking in circles aimlessly.

If your lost in the bush , stay put, till you can get proper bearing from the sun or moon. ;)

When you had enough sitting in the stand and are ready to leave stay a bit longer and have a good look around before making your move.

The BEST thing to take with you is a deck of cards.
if you get lost , deal yourself out a hand of Solitaire.
SOMEONE is bound to look over your shoulder in a few minutes and say
"black seven on the red 8"!!:D

Seriously, one of the things some don't realize is that a spruce will have dry branches under it and most times dry ground as well.
A good place to start if it is cold and wet outside.

Fire is paramount for me when lost, and I keep my fire starter in plasctic baggies.

Hunting Tip.... Call Moose at Sundown from the spot where you intend to hunt in the Morning!:sniper:
Hunting Trick.... If you have a deer looking right at you in your tree stand and your gun or bow is pointing in the wrong direction. Blow your call or make a Bleat with your voice as you turn to shoot, if they are looking at you and not flagging or running they are confused already. The call can sometimes hold them long enough for a well placed shot.:shotgun:

Well been at it at close range for a few seasons :) and that may work just fine on deer decoys ;)
I would stay as still as poss. , no direct eye contact (just cause it bugs you out more than the deer):D the deer is looking , but not seeing , it will relax and turn. Thats your time then, Or it may have made you, and you will soon see a departing animal.
Never ever take a bow shot with an alert animal, it will jump the string, sure as sheit.

What most people tend to forget.

Let someone know your plans. Where exactly your hunting, when your planing on being back.

In a hgihly hunted area get in your stand real early and stay longer then you normally would.

The guys coming in later are bound to chase up some deer, same goes when they leave their stands around ten to stretch their legs. First day of the shotgun hunt we try to stay in our stands all day.

And from experience... take a nap but be ready to shoot the instance you wake up:D

Yep. Not so much on the coast but in the interior I always scanned the bush for the biggest oldest spruce tree when its time to make a fire. It will usually have dry limbs around it as cat says, and better yet sap wounds. Scrape up the dry or partly dry sap with your knife or a stick and you have instant fire starter - pretty much as good as any of the stuff you buy..
