hunting with 7.62 X 39

I have a beater SKS at my camp that is primarily my bush gun. Easy to carry brush burn doesnt matter and ammo is realitively cheap ( NOT USING MILSURP ) Used it on several different creatures over the last 5-6 years 30 cal placed properly cant fail Remember its basically a 308 short

The SKS has become one of the most popular deer guns in the U.S. Cheap, reliable.

FWIW I'm looking at a factory ballistics chart and it's a similar cartridge to the 30-30 (a proven deer caliber) both in terms of kinetic energy delivery and tragectory. A little more powerful but in the same league.

MagnumPeanut is right on the money. The .310 bullet runs out at almost the same mv as a .303. Proper bullet placement should be the goes-without-saying hallmark of any hunter out there. Do your range time and it all should all work out... ;).

A White-tail doe this year, a spiker Mule-deer last year and a few feral pigs over the summer.

I would probably go to something with a little more ZIP if I was hunting for horns but everything I shoot is under 100m and goes into jerky and sausage.

Shot a nice 4 x 4 buck a few days ago with my 858 using PRVI ammo. Worked very well. Bullet expanded nice and exited the far side from about 90 yards. Will definitely use it again.

Pics of successful hunts on Deer and Black Bear using SKS, and 858 have been posted on this board the past few years.

In the US the SKS is turning out to be quite a handy whitetail rifle.

Yah, I was reading an article a while ago about the SKS, and it was becoming very popular in Australia as the "poor mans deer rifle" until semis were banned. :(

Edit: Damn, I guess I should have read the last post...

I bought a box of 123g jacketed hornady interlocks and pulled the steel core bullets so I could replace them with hunting rounds. Cost me $47.00 in all for 100 hunting rounds, we'll see if my gun blows up or if I can hit anything once I try this out at the range.

My father has killed dozens of moose with the 30-30 so if their numbers are comparible you wont have a problem killing anything. Also as someone said before if arrows can kill them than a 7.62x39 definately can.

Post back your results, I am interested.

My CZ-858 would make a perfect bush gun where most times I'm less than 100 yards from deer.
You don't think packing it w/ that Biga--ed banana mag in the bush sucks?
It looks bada--, yep, for sure. But either your bush is different than our bush or you've got way more patience than I. How does it carry with one hand, does it balance OK?

It's always compared to the 30-30, which makes me wonder: the 30-30 has been played with for a very long time, so without some new magic powders, it's about as good as it going to get.

What about the 7.62x39? It's relatively new to this part of the world, and mostly surplus military stuff. So just how much experimenting with different loads has actually been done? I bet if someone sat down and played, we'd see the same sort of "evolution" in energy and speed that has happened with the 30-30
