hunting with 7.62 X 39

You don't think packing it w/ that Biga--ed banana mag in the bush sucks?
It looks bada--, yep, for sure. But either your bush is different than our bush or you've got way more patience than I. How does it carry with one hand, does it balance OK?

There are 5 round mags too, you know.

My Specter Arms 3 point sling keeps it tucked in to the torso so I'm not to concerned about hanging up the mag in the bush. Besides, my bush isn't that thick. I'm sure the jungles of Vietnam were a lot thicker yet they carried AK's with banana mags regularly. I'm just interested in packing something once in awhile that is lighter than my Norc M-14 when I don't need to use .308.

Good point; I didn't think to compare jungle warfare in Asia with deer hunting in Canada, my bad...

No problem. For some reason I think of warfare when I'm out hunting. But that might explain my insistence at wearing digital woodland clothing. Even my Norc is painted up in digital woodland as well! ;)

I also pack a 30-30 Marlin with fixed 4x Bushnell but I really prefer a mag fed semi-auto and think it would be pretty cool to bag a deer with my CZ.

i was just in crown land around hinton with my cz858, it felt nice to have it since there were multiple cougar sightings in the area (not the kind that buy you drinks all night) i was walking through dense muskeg with it and the banana clip is not an issue, even with the stock sling around my neck it was very comfortable and made me feel a little more at ease.. we ended up meeting with some old timers, when they saw the 7.62X39mm ammo, they said that some of their buds grind down the end of the FMJ rounds so that they either tumble or expand better. shooting fmj through an animal unless you can make an excellent shot under the sudden stress and terror of an attack is likely doing to piss it off even more as it will pass right through it. in the crates sometimes you come across hollow point rounds but has anyone heard of this sort of bullet modification?

Never heard of that, but why not just use 7.62x39 softnose? $15 for 20 rnds is still pretty cheap--though not, I suppose compared to milsurp, and especially not if its unavailable. X2 on the 858 as a cougar insurance policy. I've spent lots of time on northern Vacouver Island--lots of cougars, thick undergrowth, and plenty of rain. The 858 is in IMHO the perfect combination of ruggedness, handling, portability, and firepower for that sort of a situation.

I' ve shot four deers with an sks (butler creek stock, B-square mount,1.5x6 scope) use Remington ammo. Exellent results.

I see no point on using esoteric stuff for hunting, with all the money we invest on a hunting trip, 15$-20$ is very resonnable considering you don't have to shoot 500 round in your sighting and hunting trip.

The 7,62x39 will do the job as long as you keep your shot inside 150 yard or so and keep them in the vitals.. No magic there.... Have fun ;)

Ho, I forgot. They do make a bolt action in 7,62x39mm it is the Cz-527 carbine.

What a beauty! Light and handles well. I have yet to shot it but I will soon.

can't wait, supposed to be accurate... Will see.

Norinco has that bushmaster jw-103 7.62x39 bolt action rifle. I have never seen one before so I don't know if they're any good. I'd rather just have another SKS, or take the money and buy a Mosin 1944 for hunting.

I used to own an SKS-D, as well as reloaded for my SKS with both cast, and jacketed bullets. And although it will kill a dear, caribou, and possibly a moose with the correct shot placement, it is no 30-30. And to compare it to a .303 British is totally off the mark. Lets look at ballistics shall we. 7.62X39 using a 123gr SP=2365fps@1527ME. A 30-30 using 170gr SP=2200fps@1827ME. How ever a 303 British using a 180gr SP=2460fps@2418ME. Although I no longer own an SKS I would suggest a heavy bullet loaded close to 2000fps for good penatration. I used to shoot a cast 160gr bullet in my SKS, that would be your deer buster;)

Ruger all weather M77 MkII in 7.62x39.... most accurate out of the box rifle that I've bought, 1.8" 5 shot group @ 200m with Federal 123gr SP. Kills deer dead no problems.

I hear that said often, but I can never find loads where a 7.62x39 approaches even the rather timid 30-30:

Tis true that 30-30 has more jam at close range. However, due to 30-30 shooting flat nose bullets and 7.62x39 shooting pointy nosed bullets, by the time the range hits about 100 yards (assuming more/less equal bullet weights), the 7.62x39 has as much jam as a 30-30 (more retained velocity). Out at 200-ish yards, the 7.62x39 actually has more jam than a 30-30.

They're NOT "ballistic twins", but they are very comparable rounds when comparing similar bullet weights.

Yeah the 7.62x39 and the 30-30 are very similar at 100 yards, who brought .303 british into this?

Possibly with equal weight bullets, but how often do you use 170gr bullets in your SKS?

MagnumPeanut is right on the money. The .310 bullet runs out at almost the same mv as a .303. Proper bullet placement should be the goes-without-saying hallmark of any hunter out there. Do your range time and it all should all work out... ;).

It's basically a 30-30, i'd use it for anything but moose at typical hunting ranges, which are well below 100 yds in these parts.

One of the previous posters likened the 7.62X39 to a 303 Britist due to the .311" bullets. I mearly pointed out the fact that while a deer killer the SKS or any other rifle chambered in 7.62X39 Russian may be it is not a 30-30 Winchester nor a 303 British.
