Hunting with 7.62x54R

ive used both out of my M39. the mfs 203gr stuff shot dead on at 100 yards. the S&B 180 shot a bit higher but still very well. but for the cost of the stuff vs performance id just use MFS. unrelated but mfs soft points will stick to a magnet.

Nice mod svt
It is my plan to hunt with MFS 203gr this year, 7.62x54 in my mosin 91/30
Need to do more testing with my svts before I take those out

How would you say they fare for

Moose

Deer

Bear

Elk

?

I am assuming that 203gr 54r should drop anything essentislly

I've gotten good accuracy with both MFS and LVE 203 gr soft points. I have several rifles in this caliber, most like it. That said, I've also had pretty good luck loading my own 180s. Everything Russian that I load and shoot works better with a .312 bullet.

guy in my group uses a 91/30 for deer, & black bears
feeds it with 203gr SP MFS stuff
worked every year so far

I use MFS SP 203gr in both my Mosins (scoped and iron sights) and my SVT40 (iron sights only).

The deer react very well to it by falling stone dead !!!

I chose years ago not to hunt bear but I would imagine the 203gr SP would have no problem dealing with one.

Sweet mod! How is it weight wise, in case you have to sling it on your back for a long trek through the bush?

It's like 12 lbs maybe, never weighed it. I'm going with guy who are mosse hunting in northern AB, they say every year, they see tons of black bears... Mainly in fields. So maybe I'll set up a bait site in the trees outside of the fields . I've never shot a bear before, worst comes worse, I'll just drop one out in a field 200+ yrds away with a 300WM. But it would be really cool to paste one with Nastasha under 100yrd.

My scoped mosin groups around 1.5" at 100 meters off the bench, and will hit an 8" gong all day long at 300 meters with MFS 203 grain SP from field expedient firing positions.

Plenty good for an all-arounder big game rifle.

I think I paid like $235 for it, with bent bolt and side mount already installed, and added $100 worth of vintage Lyman All-American scope. These things are just outstanding value...

The 7.62x54r is good for anything in North America provided you can shoot and use appropriate bullets...........Harold

I should slug my SVTs and see what bore they are.... So what all entails loading a .312 bullet into 54r? Ru reloading from spent brass? Or just swapping out the bullets on already produced ammo ?

I killed numerous bears and a deer with the 7.62 Russian, both with my 1938 MN and a parts gun I fabricated out of a $12.95 barrelled action from Century, an M44 stock, a hacksaw, a B-Square mount and a pistol scope.

I always used older Norma 180 grain loads I picked up at gun shows.

I have one moose shot in 2013 with Mosin Sniper and 180 grain S&B and in 2015 with 203 grain MFS @ appr 200 meters, head shot from support. Both rounds are accurate and effective.

I took my buck with 203 MFS last year out of the Mosin. Its overkill but plenty accurate. Ya it'll stop a bear, moose ....and almost anything else on the planet.

I have done both. I use 303British bullets. If I am replacing bullets in loaded milsurp ammo, I size the neck to make sure there is lots of neck tension.
