Hunting with a modern rifle

hopefully some day black rifles will be rolled in with hunting rifles in the public eye.

a man can dream right?

If we modern sportsmen stop worrying about whether they're going to be judged when using modern sporting rifles such as the PE90, XCR, RFB, TAVOR, etc to hunt then it will become the norm.

You're right, that's my bad for confusing migratory bird with big game.

There are however rules about 5 round magazines for semi-auto rifles in the Alberta Hunting regs and many US states. That might not mean much for someone using an XCR-M in .308, but it could mean a hell of a lot for someone using a Kriss Super V in .45

"It is unlawful to: set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting big game:
ammunition of less than .23 calibre,
ammunition that contains non-expanding bullets,
an auto-loading firearm that has the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine,
a shotgun having a gauge of .410 or less,"

If that's how the law is worded, I could see that being a problem. An XCR does have the capacity to hold more than 5 cartridges in the magazine, when you're using pistol magazines. This doesn't mean you WILL use pistol magazines, but it "has the capacity" to do it. Leaves some room for interpretation, which is what makes lawyers rich in criminal court. They're making it sound like the firearm is what determines the magazine capacity, ignoring the fact that a magazine could be changed. I think the law was written with fixed magazine semi-automatic hunting rifles in mind.

Having said that, I'm sure if you only bring a five round magazine with you, the issue of what the gun "has the capacity" to hold will never come up.

EDIT: I just realized that you're using .308... There's no .308 XCR pistol magazine, so this will be a non-issue... It'll have to be five rounds, right?

As noted, it isn't what it COULD hold, it is what you have in your pocket for mags that the CO will look at. I regularly hunt with my Garand, using 5 round clips. Just because it can hold 8 rounds means nothing, as long as I only have 5 rounders with me.

I know this will sound dumb, but what is with the no Mall ninja stuff? Is it not legal for hunting?

It is perfectly legal, just expect lots of pointing and snickering if you show up to hunt looking like a member of Seal Team 6. I don't think that anybody will care if you are wearing digital camo instead of the more hunter oriented stuff, but a chest rig, lots of mags and useless tactical gear will draw lots of abuse from your partners and is a waste of time for hunting big game.

It is more likely that hunting rifles will end up rolled in with black rifles with all of them demonized and prohibited.

As Stevo said, don't worry about other's perceptions. If you like it, if it fits you well, buy it and don't look back!

As long as it goes boom every time you pull the trigger, it'll work :)

Seriously? If you want it, buy it and use it.

You shouldn't care what others think about the gear you've chosen to hunt with.

Forward grips are not tactical baggage, in my opinion. I shoot much more comfortably with an angled forward grip attached close to the magazine. Vertical grips don't work so well for me, but if someone says they find them comfortable, who am I to say otherwise?

Second year deer hunting with the RFB, did a couple years prior to that with the Tavor. Also we hunted wild boar with an FS2000, PS90, Tavor, and CX4 Storm. Best rifles for the crap weather that is hunting. It's going to take a while for some folks to get used to seeing them, but with enough exposure they will eventually be more accepted.

Great job!! any pics?
Thanks!
And no not really only of entry and exit wound (I was by Myself and light was gone, I was gutting by flashlight) so I didn't have time or light for pics. Also first time I ever gutted anything that big (never seen it done before), you sure learn fast when the animal is dead and the light is fading hahaha!

Go for it dude. Im in the process of switching all my hunting rifles for modern black rifles. I also want to convert my remington 7400 wooden montecarlo stock for an ATI folding/clapsable stock. The wood stocks take a bad beating in the bush if you do all the doggin' like i do. Another good thing is that i can adjust the stock to suit me. Im not that tall and the standard length of pull for most hunting rifles are too long for me with my hunting jacket and all that crap on.

I hunt ed wih a guy 2 years ago with a Keltec Sub2000 in 9mm as his doggin gun. He didnt feel like he had a gun on him and looked like he was on a swat team. It was cool and all of the old timers in that camp didnt mind. Its all about the meat in the end. Mind you, half the guys were on the police force.

Hunt with what you have as long as you are enjoying the hunt and putting meat in the freezer it is all good. You will get a few opinions on that but you know what they say .Opinions are like #######s we all have one.
