hunting with a muzzlebrake without ear protection

Typically when I am hunting I don't use ear protection. And typically, due to adrenaline and everything else going on when shooting at game (deer, ducks, turkey) I don't actually hear the shot and don't seem to be affected by the noise (understanding that I probably am but it doesn't seem that way).

I recently purchased a Browning x-bolt which has a removable muzzle break. I like to shoot with the break on, i find my groupings much tighter. Shooting with the break on without ear protection is just dumb, its so loud. So my question is, while in a hunting situation with the break, and I shoot at a deer or moose without hearing protection, will it be painfully loud or will I be oblivious to it like I am shooting under normal circumstances.

ALWAYS WEAR HEARING PROTECTION WHEN SHOOTING

How is this even a question? When you shoot, wear hearing protection. When you do any loud activity, wear hearing protection. You only have one body, if you choose to destroy it through negligence, be prepared to pay the price later.

I just shot a braked 458 winmag on Friday. My electronic muffs didn't quite cut it. I also find that I get a lot of wind noise when there's a breeze.

When I'm moose hunting I need to be able to hear the critters so yes I shoot without my ear protection. The old 338 makes on hell of a bang with the brake installed but for 1 shot out in a wide open area I don't stress too much. Probably not the smartest but it sure cant be as bad as all the Metallica and megadeth concerts I went to as a punk teen.

Quality electronic muffs will enhance your hearing.
Might not work well while stalking in dry leaves...

often depends on the brake type and caliber. i have a 338 fed with a brake and its fine. had a 7 08 with a kdf brake again ok. picked up a 325 with a gill brake cut into the barrel. its brutal with muffs and plugs. would never shoot it without protection and am considering cutting the barrel to remove it. i think big fast magnums and brakes are a brutal combination.

I never understood why anyone wants a muzzle brake due to the noise level. Just not worth it for me.

Some folks just don't appreciate a 'rifle with spirit' quite like you and I, that would be my guess. It's mind over matter IMO...if you think it'll kick...it will.
I don't have a mule...so the comparison is moot. But I do have a donkey, and I've trimmed his back hooves. And folks that say " It kicks like a mule!" really need to put down the Latte and get active.
And perhaps I need another coffee, lol.
Get a good shooting jacket and go hunting without the brake...it's easier and quieter. And you don't sound silly saying your 7-08 kicks too much to handle.

I just happened to be watching Fatal Impact on Wild TV, this morning, and a fellow shot an elk with a braked rifle in the timber. The other fellow mentioned hearing more bulging, and the shooter then replied that he couldn't hear the bulging, because his ears were ringing. I was wondering about the shooter, when I saw him resting the barrel of his rifle on the trigger sticks, instead of resting the stock on the sticks.

Yea, I shot my old browning ab2 6.5cm with a brake on and no ear protection. Im am now part of the tinnitus club and have permanent hearing damage in my left ear. Always wear ear protection while shooting with a brake!

Pussyfication of society. It's downright hilarious listening to grown men go on about how they need a muzzle brake on their 223's and others with minimal recoil. These people wouldn't appear so stupid if they'd just admit they use brakes for the "coolness" factor instead of lying to themselves and others that it's for recoil.

I could see them being used on guns that actually rattle your teeth, but it seems the majority are mounted on guns that a kid could shoot without issue?

Everyone has a difference sense of pain and touch.

Some people wish to improve different elements of their shooting.

Keep your liberal prejudices comments to yourself
