Husqvarna rifles

Sorry for the distraction, but a gun is like a baseball bat and not a w#!&*n till you hit someone with it.

I like to think of them as "sporting goods". :)

.

Doh! Edited to remove all evidence of such a typo. The terminology frequently associated with said "sporting goods" has a way of affecting even the most literate and well versed. Please don't mis-understand my word choice.

Husqvarna 1600 rifles are not comparable even with the new Winchester with controlled feeding... The workmanship involved in the making of such rifles is long gone at such Remchester factories. The finish of the steel is also of a much better quality than most of today's firearms.

- Would this be a good starter rifle in .30-06 caliber?
Yes, and it would be a good finisher rifle as well. My father and grandfather lived their entire lives in the Kootenays, hunting everything from grizzly bears to elk to whitetail deer with their 30-06's, and didn't appear to suffer any from the experience.

How does it stack up to "out of the box" rifles around the same price. Eg: Remmy 770, Savage 116FXP3, Stevens 200 etc...?
You can keep the Remmy, I don't want it. The Savage and Stevens are both very good rifles for the money and very reasonably priced. But none of them have the class the Husqvarna will have - if that means anything to you (and some people are strictly about function, nothing wrong with that).

- What would be the most common scope one would purchase to go with this rifle?
I like the light, trim little scopes on my Husky's. The old 2x7 or 3x9 Compacts - or their modern equivilents - are about as good as it gets, I think. I have no idea if those scopes are still made... I have enough Leupold scopes of various flavours sitting on my rifles and unmounted in my gun safe to last me for the rest of this life.

But, one of those with a set of Cone-trol mounts. Just doesn't get any better:

Rick, how hard is it to get the rings on a scope with that design?
No more difficult than anything else, you just need to pay close attention to the orientation when you put the rings together. All my rifles have Conetrol mounts; I've been using them for... pretty close to 40 years now I guess - and I'm completely satisfied with them. I gather some people have some concerns they might not secure a scope on a hard kicking rifle. However, that Husqvarna is a .358 Norma Magnum that weighs just over eight pounds... and it recoils pretty noticeably with 250 grainers. No problem...

I was checking them out for a couple rifles but I am hesitant to drop the kind of money they want for something that has no pictures to look at first.

While I agree your set up looks very nice the ones I wanted to look at were a different model, QD's if I recall. Anyway, the guy was in no way helpful in emailing me or adding pics to his website. I hate playing the shipping game across the border and am not too interested in well maybe I'll try this and see.....

I have a very nice set of Buehlers here but they are for a small ring Mauser action, not my large. Until I find the right Beuhler I got a set of Burris signatures in polished blue. Not what I wanted but they'll work.

I have a Grade 111 Deluxe Carl Gustaf in 243, it has a slick action and shoots 1" groups at 100Meters. This is basically the same rifle as a Husky but has better wood and high luster blueing. The fit and finish on this rifle is excellent.

You cannot make a statement like that and not have pics to back it up.:D

Keep in mind you now have to compete with this.;)

He just lost his wife to cancer after a long battle, so I don't think he's in the best frame of mind the last year or so. He's also very old school and didn't even have email until fairly recently - I was actually surprised to see he now has a website.

I've dealt with him several times regarding the mounts and have never had anything less than superb personal service from him - including replacement caps being refitted to the rings at no charge when I put them back together while talking to two different people about two different things and not paying attention as I knew I should be doing.

I'm sure there's many other rings out there every bit as good and possibly better than the Conetrols, but they are very good rings. I don't really think anything else looks as smooth as attractive, however.

I can see how that could turn a persons world upside down. If I recall his wesite even has a section there dedicated to her.

So the rings are actually three pieces, two side pieces and a top cap?

IMO the Buehlers are very close to being as nice, only difference is they are vertically split with one screw top and bottom.

Yup, three pieces as you described it. It is very difficult to even notice that top cap is there when you look at them; really good machine work.

Going to go all hog here on this thread/post today as the day holds a certain significance for me. Eight years ago today when my Dad passed away I inherited his 30-06 Husqvarna Lightweight.

Husqvarna30-06.jpg

It has decent wood and came with a three leaf express rear sight.

Dad used it on Deer & Moose in the B.C. interior and in 2004 I used it on my Mule Deer draw in Alberta, hunting with my Daughter & Son In Law who reside there.

It shoots well and I'm presently working on reloads for it, changing over to Barnes TTSX bullets.

I've recently made arangements and purchased another Husqvarna, this one in 358 Norma Magnum. It's 'pretty' and I couldn't resist;). It's on it's way to it's new home as we speak:D.

Iledwod,
You rifle is on a 1640 action. To make a positive ID on you rifle, we need a complete rifle pictured.
Anyways, if it's a short barreled action (520mm) it can be a 1600 Std, if it has a cheek piece but a straight comb it's a 4100 and if it's having Monte-Carlo stock with a cheek rest it's a 4000.
It can also be other models, so give some more informations, i.e. barrel lenght, stock stype, stamping on the barrel etc...
The .308 Win caliber is a very good catch, since it's not very common in any trims.

John,
I saw this very nice 1651 .358 NM already (on another forum board). Glad to see it found a new loving home within the Gunnutz brotherhood.
Is it stamped "Special" or "Lyx" on the barrel?
Your Dad's rifle is an early model 4000 (Monte-Carlo stock). PM me a valid e-amil address and I'll send you a Tradewind's catalog page of this rifle.
Sure this babe will bring up (and keep) good memories from your Dad.

PM sent and thanks:). Oh, on Dads '06 in addition to the three leaf express sights, the barrel is 20 1/2"

I'm not sure what is stamped on the barrel of the 358 NM as it's in transit but I would expect it to arrive within the next few days. ;)I'm patiently waiting, well, as patiently as possible. My objective was for a 358 NM in a Schultz & Larsen and I've passed up the offer of a few other rifles but this one, I couldn't pass on:D.

Again, thanks for your offer of info assistance:).
