I am looking for a .223 ranch gun

I bought my Mini 14 (187 series) 'cause it was non-restricted and tricked it out with a Choate flash hider and Accu-Strut. Outshoots my AR 15 carbine, and it's no slouch.

Might sell it as I've got the yen for something else, but only to someone who doesn't diss the type based on .... ?

My answer to this question used to be Mini 14 all day long, but they have gotten just stupid expensive. I remember picking them up at gunshots back in the day for an easy $450, taking them home, shooting them and selling the ones that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn when their barrels turned hot. About one in 5 was actually quite accurate. With the new accustruts and HAR-BARs on the market you can make them very accurate, but that adds a couple hundred bucks to the already inflated price. Better to just get a CSA VZ58 in 5.56 or a used MR-1.

I spend a lot of time of the farm as well, in all weather conditions and have a need for a pest control rifle. That said, since the requirement for .223 is not for dangerous pests I went with a bolt action rather than a semi. For a quarter of the price you will get double the accuracy of a semi, if not better.

If you have your heart and cash set on a semi, then by all means, but its my opinion that you can get a much better and more accurate rifle for a lot less dollars. For the coyotes that I shoot , I need only one good shot, rather than many bad shots.
