I got bored the other day ( SKS barrel chop )

Hical sells a "Trueshot front sight conversion". It will clamp on the end of the rifle and has a front sight and thread on the end for a muzzle brake. I bought one and think it looks pretty cool. Also simple to install.

Does anyone here have a link to a video showing the basics to not as much cut the barrel but to regain a proper crown and is cutting flat at exactly 18.6 still allow legal room for the new crown.Best thing at the price of the SKS platform if you bugger up the barrel, still sell the rest for parts and go buy 5 more.

Saw that, but since I don't plan on using irons, passed on it.

In that case I would suggest sending it in to be recrowned and threaded for a muzzle brake. It means the expense of the shipping both ways plus the cost of the machining. You can recrown yourself if you have the time and patience. There are a number of videos out there to show this procedure with tools at home. If you are going to send it in to be threaded you may as well have them recrown for all that it will cost. I personally liked the look of the front sight conversion, giving it an AK style sight and conveniently had threads already on it.

For me, the biggest hurdle was getting the front sight off. The pins came very easy. The sight, not so much. I used a very heavy duty gear puller and party of a flaring tool to get it to move and it wouldn't budge. I had to heat it to get it to come apart. By the time I was done it looked like a beaver with carbide teeth attacked it. I probably should have cut a little shorter, but this gives me a chance to get the crown just right. I have a couple of options to try. I'll be sure to post a pic when I'm happy with that.

@tacticalsks: Lots of folks have noted a slight accuracy gain (reduced barrel whip?). It does change the balance because there's less weight on the front and there's the aesthetic portion.

We sell the bayo sleeve/sight removal tool, they work very well, we have done over 50 removals with ours, HERE.

can one forgo pulling the front sight and simply chop it off just to the rear of the bayo lug or would that render it too short?

Im going to try and rescue this destroyed sks barrel by cutting it before the mess.

I cut mine down to 18 5/8 crowned it and cut a 1/2 inch fine thread on it. You would not believe how wonky a chinese sks barrel was to chuck up and put in a steady rest.

Using a dremel is hardly precision crowning.
Who said anything about using a dremal. If you don't know what you're talking about stfu.
I've chopped 2 of my sks's down to 18.75 and recrowned them and there perfect.
I'm a welder fitter and have lot of experience pipe fitting working in the marine industry and other things.
the people that are telling you that this can't be done at home are noobs. I'll post picks of mine tomorrow.

nice photos
I'm still waiting on my two orders..
Hey mattcwc what lengths did you cut them down to and can you post a photo of full rifle.
