Hical sells a "Trueshot front sight conversion". It will clamp on the end of the rifle and has a front sight and thread on the end for a muzzle brake. I bought one and think it looks pretty cool. Also simple to install.
Saw that, but since I don't plan on using irons, passed on it.
I agree, a proper crown square to the bore is a pain in the ass for garage gunsmiths.
For me, the biggest hurdle was getting the front sight off. The pins came very easy. The sight, not so much. I used a very heavy duty gear puller and party of a flaring tool to get it to move and it wouldn't budge. I had to heat it to get it to come apart. By the time I was done it looked like a beaver with carbide teeth attacked it. I probably should have cut a little shorter, but this gives me a chance to get the crown just right. I have a couple of options to try. I'll be sure to post a pic when I'm happy with that.
@tacticalsks: Lots of folks have noted a slight accuracy gain (reduced barrel whip?). It does change the balance because there's less weight on the front and there's the aesthetic portion.
No, 18.5 inches generally lies between the front sight post and the bayo pivot.can one forgo pulling the front sight and simply chop it off just to the rear of the bayo lug or would that render it too short?
Im going to try and rescue this destroyed sks barrel by cutting it before the mess.
No its not.
Who said anything about using a dremal. If you don't know what you're talking about stfu.Using a dremel is hardly precision crowning.
