I hate magnums becasue:

i like my 300 wsm. i can shoot it as well as i do my 308 or 708, 3030 etc. i don't think it kills any better but i'm very confident with it so i prefer to hunt with it. even for deer i rarely carry anything else. all it is, is an 308 on steriods.

I plan to get a magnum sometime in the future. It will not replace any other rifle of mine though.

There are some ignorant people who use "magnums" and if it floats their boat, fine. Just dont tell me how inferior my non magnum is.

I dont think a "magnum" will make you a better hunter if you are just a lean out the window truck hunter anyways. Directed at nobody in particular.

If I have a rifle that is similar to a "magnum" but only a couple hundred FPS behind a "magnum" whats the point of getting a magnum?

Because I am powder burner. I have been on the gun wagon for 12+ years now and am a self proclaimed gunnut. I need another gun! Make it a double, er... I mean a magnum:dancingbanana: 7mm Mag or 300 Mag;)

I have owned every concievable caliber combination over the years that you can name, and some that some of you have probably never even heard of,with the exception of the nitro express rounds. The 30 06 will kill all game animals on this continent with authority. So will the 270 Winchester. I love my magnums, reason being, where I live the shots can be considerably beyond far. The increase in velocity of 300 to 400 fps makes a big difference in where the bullet strike will occur and the amount of expansion that happens at longer ranges. The only beef that I have is people that purchase a magnum and because of the recoil or cost of the ammunition will not use it at the ranges or open prairie to tune the rifle and themselves to it's full capabilities. Yes, they will reach further than their standard counterpart. Do they kill any better than a non magnum? In most cases, no. I loved going out with the 300, 338, and 375 and spending all day shooting gophers. Is a 300 grain bullet needed for a gopher? Not hardly. If the recoil of a magnum or the cost of feeding it scares you, then by all means buy something that you can handle.Yes, there are idiots out there that think that they have the answer to all things with their " 300 Monster Masher" or whatever their choice is, or was. I laugh at many at the range that have them, cause I love to see them cringe before during and after they shoot it. The animals are relatively safe from this bunch because they just plain can't shoot them. Would I give up my magnums? Not hardly. If Weatherby comes up with another super magnum will I buy it? You bet.

nothing wrong with magnums, had a few of them...but I seem to be going the other way lately....doowwnnn the power scale...I haven't carried my 300 Winny in two years now. Sold my 7mm Rem Mag a couple years ago...sold my 375 Weatherby...built a 416 Taylor and sold it,..even had a 308 Norma once...and a 338 Win Mag.......been carrying plain old standard non-belted cartridges lately...even boring slow ones like 7-08 and 35 Whelen...even carried a Marlin lever gun in 375 Win a couple weeks ago...what's going on?..

hey....what's that thumping noise?...he11, it's that mulie I shot with a non-magnum last year.....he's trying to get out of the freezer again....I better get the .22.....magnum, that is :dancingbanana:

I don't know if this applies to all magnums, but my 602 in 375 H&H is a heavy rifle, for off-hand shooting you do gain an edge from the weight. This weekend I was hunting with fellow CGNer Coyote and got my whitetail at 50 yds. Broadside shot, liquified lungs, it died on the spot. A big gun can also help if there's tangle between you and the target but for most of my hunting I prefer a 30-06 and for that reason I will probably sell this former safe queen and buy a new Savage American classic in the grand old caliber for the same money.

I would say it's nothing more than an inferiority complex by those who are "cartridge deficient". The rest of us are quite comfortable with our "magnums" and don't feel the need to discuss them at every turn......:p :dancingbanana:

Rifles in Magnum Ctgs...

While I have more rifles in standard cartridges I also have the 'magnums' covered with rifles in .264 Win Mag and a .300 Win Mag. The only other 'mag' I'd consider at this point would be something in 7mm WSM.

Certainly not a 'need' just a 'want'.... ;)

Come to think of it, in casual conversation, I never refer to my "magnum" rifles as a .338 Mag WinMag and my .270 WSM as a ShortMag. I just refer to them as a .338 and a .270 period. I chose the calibers based on published performance and just because I just plain wanted one, no more, no less. It wouldn't make any difference what they were called. What matters most is what you can do with it.

savagefan, that is too funny...but oh so fitting.:D

I wont knock magnums, ever since we have been forced to use steel shot for duck hunting all I use now is 3 inch magnums. They just work better. Most cartridges serve a purpose, they just have to be used in the right situation.

The thing with them is some new guys to hunting will just go out and buy the gun with the biggest damn cartridge without evaluating what they will use it for. Then they have much more power than whats required.

The only thing I currently have bad to say about "magnums" is that I don't have one. Oooops, I stand corrected, I have a 22 WMR for groundhogs in the backyard.

Right now I only own 1 centerfire (Win70 in 30-06). In the future, I plan on expanding my centerfire arsenal and I can honestly say that WSM's and WSSM's are definitely on the list. I want to try a 223 WSSM for yotes and either try a 7MM WSM or a 325 WSM for deer/moose/(maybe elk) -- not because I really need to, but because I want to.

Also kicking around the idea of turning my 30-06 into a 338-06, but that is a different thread altogether. On that line, what would a 325-06 be like??? Any real advantage over the 30-06? How would it stack up to the 338-06??

Even Trojan calls thier "Large" Condoms the Magnum !

The 8mm-06(325-06) has been around since the 40's and by all acounts is an excellent round.

There is lots of reloading data for it.
