I hate magnums becasue:

Id guesstimate that 80% of guys on this board (majority of whom shoot often), wont shoot a 300 win mag as well as they would a 30-06, and Im probably one of them, although most wont admit they cant shoot a magnum rifle as good as a "lesser" cartridge

Advertising stimulates the market, some is good advertising and some is bad but it has nothing to do with the practical usefullness of a magnum rifle.

Its only the WSSMs I hate and yes, I hate them based on thier looks only. I'm very superficial.


I guess I hate the name "Ultra Mags" too. But that is just because its a stupid name, i love the performance of the .338RUM.

I think they rock, why , cause it is selling ammo , and guns , which means the sport is alive and well. If they go the way of the .307 and .356 fine. Just hope they come up with another product to keep her going.
Who cares , the sport is whats important. :D

I cant shoot my 30-06 as well as I can shoot my 300WSM;)


I can definitly say that I can shoot a 223 better (or at least enjoy it more) than any magnum, but I cannot say that I can shoot a 30-06/280/308/270 any better than i can a 7RM or 300. Not enough to tell the difference, anyway.

nope. it means that they are selling more firearms to fewer owners.

there are less and less firearm owners and hunters every year. has been like this for a decade. so the creation of these new calibers is solely to sell more product. has nothing to do with making the sport any more alive. only the firearm sales industry.

not saying that's a bad thing, it keeps gunstores alive. but look at it for what it is. the creation of media and marketing that somehting faster and shorter will kill game "better" and is more accurate is nothing more then sales. have NOTHING to do with keeping the SPORT alive. only the firearms industry.

why is a 416 Rigby a "magnum"

it was the 30-06 of the 416 world, and has been matched (in factory ammo) by the 416 Rem MAG, and bested by the 416 Wby (basicaly hot loaded belted 416 Rigby). in terms of power, ANY 416 is a "magnum"??

a 30-06 ackley improved should be a magnum then. it equals the 300 H&H MAG basically.

why a 22-250 when a 220 swift is faster. why a 220 swift when a 223 wssm is faster :runaway:

define performance. some guys might find a 222 "performs" better for their intended use than a 22-250. fast & flatter doesnt mean better, although most guys wouldnt agree with that

I sure am glad there are a stupid amount of cartridge choices, cuz it'd be boring if we all had the same thing. Im going to go pet my 30-06 now :D
 
I don't own a magnum... but I do have a sweet spot for the 300 WSM... My take on the magnum thing is that alot of guys have it in their head that the 308, 270 etc are not enough gun for bambi...

1000 foot pounds at target is enough...

Use the gun you want, just use it well!!!

I lump it into the magnum category for this thread, becuase of it's power levels. It's not a perfect system...:p

This thread is interesting because it actually reveals that most of the magnum bashers are actually bashing people and not the cartridge, or don't like magnums because of additional recoil or other *personal* reasons.

Which was the whole point of the thread.;)
